The clothes looked more appealing inside the store than on the racks outside.
The clothes inside the store looked more appealing than on the racks outside.

第一句补全为the clothes looked more appealing inside the store than (they looked) on the racks outside.
第二句补全为the clothes inside the store looked more appealing than (the clothes) on the racks outside.
但我觉得不能补充为the clothes inside the store looked more appealing than (they looked) on the racks outside. 因为这样补充句子就不再平行了。
强行要求平行和比较对象就变成the clothes inside the store looked more appealing than (they) on the racks (looked).

11. The clothes inside the store looked more appealing than on the racks outside.

This sentence seems to compare some clothes (The clothes inside the store) to a location (on the racks
outside). It is hard to tell whether the author wants to compare two separate sets of clothes or one set of
clothes in two display locations.

One way to correct the sentence would be to rewrite it as the sentence in problem 6.

Correction (a): The clothes looked more appealing inside the store than on the racks outside.
This version makes sense because it puts the phrase inside the store after the comparison signal more
appealing, thus making that phrase available for a comparison with on the racks outside. In this version
there is one set of clothes, and the comparison is between how these same clothes looked inside the store and how they looked on the racks outside. (Perhaps a customer brought the clothes into the store, and is describing the different appearance of the same clothes before and after the move.)

Correction (b): The clothes inside the store looked more appealing than (did) those on the racks
outside.

This version compares two sets of clothes, the clothes inside the store and those on the racks outside, telling us that the former are more appealing than the latter. The word did is optional.

Manhattan对句子进行修改时还不是调整了inside the store的位置才达成比较同一衣服的不同looks。所以个人认为不造成歧义。。
