Not only...but also…/But also
1. Notonly…but (also)/Not just…but also
Construction:Subject not only do but (also) do
Not only A but (also)B do
Not only A do but(also) B do etc.
These constructions areused for two parallel items that reinforce each other.
Weighttraining not only increases muscle massand strength but also boosts bone density.
Notice that the twoeffects mentioned are both positive effects.
Remark:
If the part following"NOT ONLY" has both a SUBJECT and a VERB, both a SUBJECT and a VERB after“but (also)” are required because a clause (SV) must be parallel to a clause (SV).
Not only doesthis drug enhance alertness, but it (also) suppresses appetite.
Moreover, the following construction is considered correct on the GMAT:
Not only + VERB + SUBJECT, SUBJECT + also + VERB.

Don’t eliminate the choice without not only and fall into the trap set byGMAC just because you take it for granted that but also must be coupled with notonly.
