答案为B，对里面的时态用法很疑惑，看过以前的讨论，有人解释为“过去的过去的动作。提示点The fact that King Alfred had occupied and fortified London in 886 [did] not mean that he had，核心是did，说明动作均是过去的过去”。但还是不明白，这句话主语为FACT，谓语为did not mean,但fact的同位语从句中有明确的过去时间，怎么能用过去完成时呢？请NN指教

时态不是本题最主要的，但确实时态也是对的

the fact 后that 引导的是同位语从句，这么看：The fact --did not mean that he had also won

应该时态清晰了吧

同意，一般过去，过去完成时态都可以，关键是两个that之间要一致。

另外，我还是认为过去完成时更好，表示过去已经终结，因为有：the invading Danes were well aware of this weakness and used it to their advantage in 893　说明前面发生／未发生的事都是在Danes　were ... and used it ... in 893之前的。

谢谢楼上两位朋友，我也想这里用过去完成时就是因为后面的“in 893”这个时间，这题我是用的排除法，C D E 中的it 没有指代，所以排除，A 明显错误，because原因状语从句不能做主语，所以就选B了。嘿嘿～～

感觉这个题，ETS挺坏，如果把A中的because从句换成that引导的主语从句或者the fact引导的同位语从句的话，是否就可以选A呢？还是依然要用过去完成时?

想问问A除了时态的问题，本身的用法是否有错呢？Just because ... did not mean that...

能否详细解释一下为什么：because原因状语从句不能做主语。似乎看到过很多这样的句子，如果不能这样用，正确地用法有哪些呢？
