A1. “Whether in politics or in business, leaders of any group need to understand that learning to compromise is ultimately more important than winning.”
Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your position with reasons and/or examples from your experience, observations, or reading.
As to leaders of any group either in politics or in business, learning to compromise is ultimately more important than winning? The problem seems to arouse controversy between different opinion parties. Some may advocate that the ability to compromise is the most important trait that a leader of any group must possess. Basing on the fact that winning is the ultimate goal of a group, however, the opponents argue that winning can never be overemphasized. Recognizing that a more proper solution to the question can only be achieved by incorporating all relevant aspects, I would like to advocate although both of the two abilities referred above can not be neglected, learning to compromise is more important in many cases.
Firstly, compromising is by no means giving up or conceding endlessly, but rather the necessary sacrifice that groups must make to maximize collective interests. In this sense, compromising itself is virtually a strategy and tactics of winning that a leader must grasp.
Secondly, compromising plays a pivotal role in negotiation. Under many circumstances, leaders of various interest groups cannot solely rely on the ability of winning to achieve their goals. Instead, they need to arrive at an agreement through negotiation . It is hard to imagine how leaders who lack this ability but always bear winning in mind can make the agreement. For example, in some industry where exists excess competition, almost all of the companies will have to cut prices at which their products or service sell to maintain or expand their market shares respectively while their businesses are approaching the edge of going bankruptcy. In this situation, if all the leaders just know how to defeat the competitors , the whole industry would continue suffering a great loss due to the sagging price. On the contrary, if the leaders know how to compromise and can come to an agreement to set price limit, the situations all the companies are confronting will be greatly improved.
One argument against my contention may asserts that sometimes compromising will to some extent impair the morale of the members of the organization. Admittedly, it may be the case. However, as I mentioned above, in essence compromising is a tactics of winning. Therefore, through adequate communication with their subordinates, leaders can address this kind of problems.
In sum, I agree that knowing how to win is an important ingredient for a leader of any group. however, it is not always the most important one. In many cases, learning to compromise is more important.
