答案为E，新问题：为什么those 后不加助动词do? 到底什么情况下加助动词？困惑！！

those是指vehicles

补全了，就是vehicle buring gasoline or diesel fuel 。 现在分词做定语修饰those(vehicles)

为什么those 后不加助动词do?

      因为比较的对象是一个名词vehicles(powered by natural gas),所以后面也是一个名词，就不用加do

到底什么情况下加助动词？

      比较复杂，有时候会省略，总的原则是不会引起歧义，建议楼住看置顶的语法点链接，好东东阿！

谢谢两位啦！不过还是有两个小问题：

一、比较对象：职业侠客（二楼）认为比较的对象是VEHICLES，所以不用加助动词；但偶认为将其理解为比较两种VEHICLES 发出POLLUTANTS 的数量也是可以的，在此情况下，为什么不加助动词呢？而我们经常见到的正确结构却是像下面一句：

例1：The United States government employs a much larger proportion of women in trade negotiations than does any other government. 在这句中，如果把"than does any other government"中的"does"去掉是不是也可以呢？据我的观查大部分SVO THAN ......... 的结构中是要补加助动词的。所以还是困惑。。。。。

A is more adj. than B  or  A can do more adj than B中adj就不会和B产生歧义，可以省略。但是如果答案同时出现 A can do more adj than B can和 A can do more adj than B，还是应该优先选择补出，当然补出一定要补对，前面是情态动词或者系动词比较的后半部分也应该是对应的情态动词或者系动词，如果补错了，则该选项错误，如I can run faster than you do。

抱歉还有一个问题：

23. Freedman’s survey showed that people living in small towns and rural areas consider themselves no happier than do people living in big cities.

这句的do是代替前面的CONSIDER么？如果是这样的话，这句话的意思是：“.....住在小城镇的人认为他们不如住在大城市的人们认为的那样快乐”，句意似乎不通。这样理解是否更好：“.....住在小城镇的人认为他们不如住在大城市的人们那样快乐”？

而且根据三楼的解释，比较的对象应该是住在不同地区的人，所以THAN后面不需要加助动词DO，即使去掉DO也不影响句意。

反正怎么读都觉得没有DO才顺！

但对于“如果从句的主语和主句的主语不一致，则省略其谓语及与主句相同的部分。”有些不理解：

如果是vehicles powered by natural gas emit less of certain pollutants than  those......(“名词一 do more 名词二 than 名词三”结构中 , 省略助动词则可能名词三与名词二进行比较，会否引起歧义？
