what从句单复数：prep08和ron说法不一致？

prep08-166题，

what is much more difficult to determine is the use to which primitive peoples put the caves, the reason for their decoration, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animals.

其中prep例句：
What his father left him are a few English books.
what are difficult to understand are A and B.

但是ron说由于what做主语，其谓语应该用单数，并给出例句：
what his father gave him is a few books.
what is difficult to understand is A and B。在GMAT中不可能见到what are...的用法，除非是问句。
