你是说念PhD吗？

This is one of the two most common mistakes Chinese make. Unlike what most people who have not studied in US believe, companies in US DO NOT care about your field of study. Rather, they hire people from different background. If you watched the video Goldman show when they come to do on campus presentation, you would realize Goldman even hired history major students for their investment banking division. Companies in US believe technical skills can be taught MUCH easier  at work than at school. Therefore they usually look for people who have the personalities and skills they want, rather than the people who have the most technical knowledge.  So if you want to do equity research and believe you have the qualities the companies seek, by all means, apply.

如果你说的是quant research的话，也分不同的种类，有hard quant类的research，也有普通quant research。hard quant一般都招数学物理计算机PHD，普通的quant会招MFE。总的来说MFE教的是应用技能，而不是research技能。

普通的quant和hard quant有什么区别吖？

hard quant是做数学的modeling的，一般的quant就是strategy, structuring，desk quant，这些只需要理解model，制定策略等，能够应用就行了。

equity research不是quant research。如果是做algo trading或者statistical arbitrage的策略的，一般不叫equity research。

fixed income是非常数学intensive的。

谢谢前辈~！desk quant的desk是指什么吖？好像经常看到desk xx, desk xxx......  是跟trading floor的position有关么？

其实我就是想问如果读MFE但申请时career goal写equity research会被鄙视么？  改成investment research会不会好一些吖？这个包括了equity和fixed income.... 因为看大摩的网页有这句话：“Morgan Stanley Investment Research is one of the financial industry's dominant thought leaders in equity and fixed-income investing. 。。。。Our teams collaborate to assist Morgan Stanley clients with investment decisions, using cash and derivative instruments across major asset classes and geographies.   ”

或者这样问，在financial engineering这块，如果不想做trading (女生吖),  structuring, asset management, 还可以干啥吖？
