关于they能否修饰介词后名词的问题请教

我记得相关代词指代问题上有提过代词优先就近指代，但是不能指代介词后跟的名词是么？
下面这道题中
Many population studies have linked a high-salt diet to high rates of hypertension and shown that in societies where they consume little salt, their blood pressure typically does not rise with age.
(C) shown that in societies where little salt is consumed,
(D) they showed that in societies where little salt is consumed,

C是对的，D是错的。先不管D的they是多余的问题。Prep上面的解释说，因为they在这里指代不清楚，有可能是studies也有可能是rates。
我有点儿不解的是 rates应该是跟在介词to之后的，还能指代么？

以及

Whereas the use of synthetic fertilizers has greatly expanded agricultural productivity in many parts of the world, an increase in their use can create serious environmental problems such as water pollution, and their substitution for more traditional fertilizers may accelerate soil structure deterioration and soil erosion.

这句话中their为啥就能直接指代fertilizers呢？

ponoun ambiguity这个问题不是GMAT考察的重点，只能作为辅助工具。就是说不能单凭“指代不清”这个理由判断某个选项是错误的，既然不能用这个判断对错，还有必要掌握吗？有必要！因为在最后的判断中（比如还剩下两个选项，怎么看两个都没有明显错误，很纠结啊。。。）这时候“指代不清”可以帮助我们找出更好的答案！但是千万不要一上来就用“指代不清”，你很可能会排除掉正确的选项！
我罗嗦了一堆，不知道楼主明白了没

。本人中文就这个水平了。。。。
比如这道题：
Many population studies have linked a high-salt diet to high rates of hypertension and shown that in societies where they consume little salt, their blood pressure typically does not rise with age.
(C) shown that in societies where little salt is consumed,
(D) they showed that in societies where little salt is consumed,
不能一上来看见D指代不清就排除，只有看到C以后在排除D, 因为C比D更好，没有指代不清的问题。如果C有严重语法错误，比如主谓不一致，那就退而求其次选D了(但是D的时态showed有问题，假设是they show....吧)
再比如这道题：OG 78
A proposal has been made to trim the horns from rhinoceroses to discourage poachers; the question is whether tourists will continue to visit game parks and see rihnoceroses after their horns are trimmed.
(B) whether tourists will continue to visit game parks to see one once their horns are
(C) whether tourists will continue to visit game parks to see rihnoceroses once the animals' horns have been
这里C比B明显好很多，指代更清楚，指代不清是比较出来的，不是想出来的，要有参照物哦。

我是认为错误不在于指代不清，而是指代错误 they这里意思上应该指的 societies里的人们，但是前边没有合适的先行词。
第二个问题，
我认为they和their是不同的，所以他们的情况也不能，their作为物主代词可以指代所有格，这种of结构也是一种所属结构。

按照RON的说法：
1、studies have linked and (have) shown 是一个整体，说明是studies发出的两个意义动作，他说it is ridiculous to say that studies have linked something first and then showed something else.
2、从句中的主语若是有代词，会优先与主句中的一致，这里：use of synthetic fertilizers 和后面的an increase in their use 以及再后的 their substitution对应的都是一个东西，其实，我个人觉得吧，指代词不是很原则性的，如果把这个句子放进去读，我觉得很容易认为都是同一个事物，没有什么歧义。
