Q: Do you agree or disagree withthe following statement? The purpose of television is to educate, not to entertain
Signed by rapidchange and progression, TV, the most prevalent and impacted modern technology,is stepping the era of tremendous mature and versatility, which will havesignificant influence on people’s life. Some people argue that televisionserves the purpose of entertainment, however, others claim that the purpose of televisionis to educate. On personal level, I support the prior one for reasons that mostprograms are designed as entertainment-oriented for both children and adults.
There is nodenying that through educational programs, such as SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN,DISCOVERY, people could broad our horizon and gain knowledge about science andcutting-edge technology. Also, to some extent, these popular TV programs canserve as stimulus, which will motivate children to explore deeply intoscientific facts. This, of course, has exert influence on rudimentary educationfor the young.
However, comparedwith minority educational programs appearing on television, programs forentertainment, such as talking shows, drams, variety shows have taken over. Forexample, a blind dating program called IF YOU ARE THE ONE in China has become acraze among a substantial amount of people, ranging from students tobusinessmen, famers to leaders of companies. The reason why it has succeeded isthat it provides people with an efficient way to relax themselves afterstriving on their work or study the whole day without much thinking. People cansimply gain happiness by watching male and female guests interacting on thestage. What’s more, young children nowadays are benefiting from all kind ofcartoons. Apart from traditional games, their world is illuminated by vividcartoon figures like BATMAN, MICKEY MOUSE, so on and so forth. As a result, television has become an indispensable part for people’s entertainment.
In a nutshell, apartfrom being a sheer electronic application, TV, which provides the opportunityto escape daily pressure, makes people enter into world of sensual pleasure. Therefore,on no account can we ignore the entertainment value of televisions.
