What are the qualifications for admission to the programme?
Aston MBA candidates usually have an undergraduate degree and at least 3 years of post-graduation work experience. We also ask for two references.
We will consider applicants who do not have academic qualifications or with fewer years of experience, if they can demonstrate exceptional motivation and capabilities through other means.
Dr Brigitte Nicoulaud, Director of MBA Programmes, hints that standout candidates will be those who can:
> demonstrate great management potential in their future career
> succeed in a cutting edge MBA that demands intellectual rigour and entrepreneurial flair
> enrich the learning experience by sharing their business and life experiences
> be motivated to make a real difference to their company, industry or community.
Do I have to take the TOEFL?
The TOEFL is not required for native English speakers. Other applicants, particularly international students whose first language is not English, should consider taking a test that satisfies our language requirements, such as one of the following:
> TOEFL Internet Based Test score of 105 overall, with a minimum of 22 in any section
> IELTS score of 7.0 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in any section.
Pre-sessional English programmes may be available for candidates whose English test results fall just short of these requirements.
Are GMAT scores required?
No. However, would recommend that you take the GMAT if you believe your academic records do not accurately reflect your analytical and quantitative skills.
How Much Work Experience Is Enough?
As a core requirement, we ask that our Full-time, Executive (Part-time) and Online MBA applicants offer 3 years of relevant work experience before they begin the programme, and our Executive MBA applicants 5 years.
But what if you plan to take your MBA in 2014 or later and are lacking the years? In that case, our MBA Programme Manager, Jenny Evans, offers the following tips on strengthening your experience:
> Start volunteering – demonstrate altruism and make a real difference to your community
> Be ambitious – take on challenging projects at work or university that others shy from
> Show leadership – seize opportunities that highlight your potential as a future leader
> Think like an entrepreneur – plan a small business or help improve someone else’s
> Focus on achievements – depth and breadth of experience is as important as the years.
Acing your Scholarship Interview
We offer a range of scholarships and bursaries to qualified candidates across all our MBA programmes. Awards are limited and offered on a first-come-first-served basis.
Some awards require an informal interview that is conducted in-person, by telephone or via Skype. Here are some of our favourite prep questions. Practise these, and you will be ready to get ahead in your interview:
> What prompted you to apply for the Aston MBA?
> How did you choose which schools to apply to and what were your main criteria?
> What are your key strengths?
> What difference would an MBA would make to your career?
> What achievement are you most proud of?
> What are your expectations of studying the MBA?
> Describe a business mistake you have made that you have learned from.
> What qualities make a good business leader?
> Why should you receive this scholarship?
