OG关于D选项的解释：
D Th e placement of in the past makes it unclear
whether it is supposed to modify rivals or
would have conceded; if the latter, then it is
redundant.

答案没有问题，通过其他语法点很清楚地能找到best choiceE
但是D选项说的in the past到底应该修饰什么呢？

这题in the past 本来是应该修饰would have conceded，但是这里修饰不清，有修饰rivals的歧义，并且，如果in the past在这里修饰would have conceded，那么它就和前面的previously重复了。因为previously也是修饰would have conceded，且意思和in the past一样。

"it previously would have conceded to rivals inthe past" in the past 是时间状语，只能修饰动词不能修饰名词的啊。迷惑
