Universities should require everystudent to take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study. Universities advocate that student should study variouscourses without being limited in their own major, which can be trace to severalreasons. First, it’s not that easy for students to realize clearlywhat their interests are because we can be dazzled by the materialistic world. Our thoughts can be easily distorted by other people’s speech. So even webecome university students, we are still at loss about what our future will belike, what kind of job we will do. If we choose various courses, our intereststowards something may be aroused. I chose economics as my major just becauseit’s a hot major and people always say that students who major in economics caneasily find jobs with high salary after graduation, but I don’t have intensepassion for it. After stepped into my university, I joined lots of courses justbecause I want to try more things and I finally got interested in film narratorafter a heated discussion with the professor and my classmates. When one hasthe chance to be exposed to new things, I think he should grasp it because itcan bring him some possibility that he never thought before. There are enormousstudents like me once don’t know the meaning of university life and they thinkuniversity life is just hurrying from one classroom to another to finish thecompulsory credit, which is not correct. Life in college should always prepareus to get ready to find more possibilities. Also nowadays fields of study are quite related to eachother. When we want to do some research about the culture of some places, wehave to take lots of stuff into account, like books, movies, buildings, historyand so on. So literature, drama, architecture and history are linked to eachother when we do such project. Another example about astronomy, we should havebasic knowledge of math and physics to learn it well. So actually there is nototally independent subject in the world anymore. Then leaning various courses canbe useful more or less. However, though these advantages mentioned above areadmitted, there still are some disadvantages if every student chooses greatnumber of courses. The first problem coming to my mind is that there is alimitation of resources offered by the university. There is always a maximumnumber of students that can be admitted into the classroom and that means somestudents’ wish cannot be satisfied. Furthermore, some universities likeShanghai Finance University offer courses only in one field of study. It’simpossible for the university to spend huge amount of money to attract lots of teachersfrom other fields of study to open courses there. Moreover, it’s also impossible for students to attend somany courses without having a negative influence on their major study, especially for graduate students who are study for their master degree.Students will apply for master degree only because they want go deeper in thefield of study to do more researches or become more professional. In thissense, they will be quite busy dealing with their own major courses and may notbe appropriate to choose various courses to develop their other hobbies. It’s important for a student to balance when they choosecourses. Various courses can lead them to fresh ideas, but also will occupythem with huge amount of times. For universities, it’s good to offer morecourses for the students, but they have to consider other factors like funds, space and so on.
