请问E中的the number of 和their numbers有什么区别？抛开declined这个错误来看~我怎么觉得应该是the number加单数更合适啊？

The number of 不是这么用的，其实the number of很好理解，就是什么什么的数量，但是后面接的是实实在在的一个东西，你说the number of them就相当于说有一种东西叫做“them”，这个的数量是多少多少怎样怎样，很明显就不对吧……

题目选C对吧？

their numbers按照中文理解是,他们的数量在减少,,,,为什么不用单数呢? numbers or populations这些复数形式的集合名次,都需要用复数么?

曼哈顿上解释过，如果你想make a comparison，而不是仅仅描述这个“数目”本身，那么用numbers是对的。
这道题原句里面有compared，应该就是暗示选numbers吧。愚见！
