关于曼哈顿中in isolation 和isolated的说明及OG同情况实例中的不解

Manhattan Chpater 11中 V-A-N原则4中说道 prefer an adjective to a noun
接着在下文的example list中最后一个列出：
         Wordy                                              Better
      He is in isolation                                  He is isolated
但是，又在后文说道 watch out for possible slight changes of meaning, too. In isolation does not mean exactly the same thing as Isolated.

   我看到这里的时候是觉得，in isolation 一般就是表示“隔离”，而“isolated”除了表示隔离，还有“孤独”的意思啊
接着就是一道OG224题目：
Innits of the Bering Sea were in isolation from contact with Europeans longer than Aleuts or Inuits of the North Pacific and northern Alaska.
A: in isolation from contact with Eurpoeans longer than
B: isolated from contact with Eurpoeans longer than
C: in isolation from contact with Eurpoeans longer than were
D: isolated from contact with Eurpoeans longer than were
E: in isolation and without contact with Eurpoeans longer than

答案是D，但是我一开始选择是C，因为我考虑了曼哈顿说的那个意思会有轻微的改变，就像遇到“是否”用whether 而不用if一样，if还有如果的意思，这样的话容易有歧义，可是为什么答案解释就是说选isolated，因为简洁原则呢？

急！！

说不清楚，但是个人感觉isolation是处于一种状态，主动的。例如内心孤独的。
但是isolated是一种被动的行为，例如由于自然条件导致的。
