Colleges and universities should require all faculty to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position. While it holds true that spending time working outside the academic world in relevant to the courses is conducive to faculty’s teaching in several aspects, there are drawbacks while ignoring them would render the recommendation counterproductive. And those subjects that have little to do with the practical proffessions should also be considered. Admittedly, working outside the academic field in relevant professions benefits a lot. First of all, it can enhance teachers’ understanding of what they teach. Working in academic field is totally different from working in practical professions, which provides oppurtunities for faculty to put what they have learned into practice and by doing so, their understanding of their courses will be advanced. For instance, spending time working in a bedlam give a chance for a teacher, who teaches how mental disorders develop, to observe the whole progress of mental disorders in person, which can inprove the comprehension of what he teaches. Better understanding teachers have of their subjects, better education students receive. Secondly, working in relevant professions outside the academic field enable faculty to realize the latest progress in their professions. And this update information gives students an edge when they enter job market after graduation because they know about what is going on in the real industries. In addition, working in relevant professions exhibits a picture of the applications of what the faculty are teaching, which can raise both the interest of teachers’ teaching and students’ learning. Therefore, practiacal field work really helps faculty and students a lot. However, at the same time, working in relevant professions outside the academic field can be misused to serve wrong ends. On the one hand, once some faculty work in practical professions, they focus all attention on making profits for their own, which will seriously distract them from teaching and undermine the teaching quality. On the other hand, that faculty may bring too much practical information to students but ignore the basic theoretical foundation impose bad influence on students study. Thereby it should be cautious to adopt the recommendation to require faculty working outside the academic field in relevant profession to avoid unwanted results. Furthermore, teaching subjects such as pure math and pure philosphy don’t have the need to work outside the academic field. Pure math and pure philosophy is totally constructed by abstact concepts and logics. Working in practical professions contributes little to them. Besides, it is actually hard to find a relevant profession correspoding to pure math or pure philosophy. To sum up, requiring faculty to spend time working outside the academic field in professions relevant to the courses benefits in many ways, including advanced understanding for teachers, knowledge of fields’ latest progress and applications. But at the same time, there are drawbacks should be avoided such as faculty putting too much attentin on profit making or faculty teach too much practical skills. In addition, pure math or pure philosophy works better in pure academic fields. |
