His studies of ice-polished rocks in his Alpine homeland, far outside the range of present-day glaciers, led Louis Agassiz in 1837 to propose the concept of an age when great ice sheets existed where there were areas now temperate.
where there were areas now temperate表述很wordy and confusing

另外where前面需不需要加一个in the place,变成existed in the place where...

(C) when great ice sheets existed where there were areas (now temperate)
The word "where" here is illogical. Ice sheets existed where there were areas?

More bout "there are"
For example:
(1)First-aid supplies are in the drawer.(We are already know that there are first-aid supplies;the point is to specify where they are located.)
(2)There are first-aid supplies in the drawer.(The point is to specify the existence of the first-aid supplies, but their location is an afterthought)

(B) great ice sheets existed in (what are now temperate) areas
is the same as:
ice sheets existed in areas that are now temperate
If you change (E) in this way:when great ice sheets existed in areas that are now temperate.
It would become another correct version of #B sentence.
