OG解释A. The omission of that after the dash makes the function of the final clause unclear. The structure makes that clause appear to be an awkward and rhetorically puzzling seperate assertion that the writer has appended to the prior claim about what the anthropologists believe. The agent or clause of reducing is unclear.

对红字部分的的解释有疑惑，请大神们解惑；为什么说unclear,这不能理解为our ancestors suffered an event这句话造成的结果吗，然后使用comma+v-ing也可以啊

这里reducing就是comma + ing modifier，修饰的是ancestors （subject），所以并不是unclear，而是nonsensical

我之前也一直搞不懂，今天弄懂了！
向楼上所说 Adverbial Modifiers "，reducing their numbers "的主语也必须是 ancestors

看一下 Manhattan上面的例子：
The engineer fixed the problem, earning himself a promotion.
Because the engineer fixed the problem, he earned a promotion.
主语是一致的都是 engineer

所以这题的主语也是一致的都是ancestors，那就不符合逻辑了。
