EVENT TRANSCRIPT
Tue Nov 20, 2012 1:04 pm
1.   Q: Before people start posting their questions, I havesome of my own. So Megan, how would you describe the key value props of JHUCarey?
Tue Nov 20, 2012 1:08 pm
A: Historically JHU as a university hasbeen tackling some of society's most vexing and grave problems like poverty, illness, etc. This transcends the values of the Business School as well. One of the key features of theeducational philosophy is "teaching business with humanity in mind."We are a new school and value innovation, creativity, insight, and areentrepreneurially driven. Hands-on-learning is also a very important piece ofthe puzzle here as well.
“Teachingbusiness with humanity in mind”

2.   Q: What does your team consider in the admissionsprocess?
Tue Nov 20, 2012 1:13 pm
A: One of the things that I think theAdmissions Committee does well, is consider each individual and theircircumstances when reviewing the application. We do require several essays, your onlineapplication, 2 recommendations from professional sources, for most programs, the GMAT, official transcripts from any institution of highereducation/post-secondary education, and a resume/CV. We do consider all the pieces ofthe puzzle, and do not solely base decisions off of a standardized testor GPA alone, but the whole picture. We do also grant, by invitation only, interviews for some of our programs as well.

3.   Q: Is there such thing as an "ideal candidate"in your perspective?

Tue Nov 20, 2012 1:16 pm
A: The goal of theadmissions committee is to make sure the candidate is going to be successful inthe program, so that's first and foremost. However, in line with my previouspost about what we consider in the application process, everyone is viewedindividually. We are however looking for someone who is going to add value to our programs and thecohort as well as someone who demonstrates leadership. Contrary tobelief, it is not always about numbers, but really a holistic review of a candidate.

4.   Q: For candidates considering your school--what would yousay would be the benefits of being based in Baltimore?

A: I love Baltimore (and no, I did notgrow up here!), so I like to think I'm a bit unbiased, but Baltimore is a greatcity, both in terms of professional networks and opportunities and socially. We are strategically located inclose proximity to Washington, DC (about an hour away), Philadelphia, PA, NYC,etc. Both in and around the city, there are lots of small and largecorporations and projects that as a student or recent graduate, you can (andshould take advantage of).

5.   Q: Hi Megan. I am primarily interested in the FlexibleMBA program at Carey. Is there much of a difference between the curriculumfocus of the Global MBA and the Flexible MBA? Does Carey also consider theFlexible MBA program to be a humanistic approach to business education? If so,could you give an example of how the curriculum is geared toward business witha humanistic approach? Thanks – Adam

A: The Flexible MBA and the GMBA have alot in common, it is primarily the structure (part time versus full time) thatis the major difference, and that people are working full-time during theFlexMBA and not the GMBA. They both are driven by the humanistic approach. Itis more of the teaching philosophy, so the professors, the projects,case-studies, speakers, really do teach you how to take into considerationother people and factors when making a business decision: everything fromcoworkers, to senior leadership, to competitors, to the global market). In boththe Flex and GMBA programs, you have the opportunity to choose aconcentration/industry vertical to specialize in, and there are often projects like our Discovery toMarket project, where you work with entrepreneurers within the university andhelp them commercialize their products, we have international experiences, ethics seminars, etc.
Discovery toMarket Project

6.   Q: Is there such a thing as an MBA candidate who wouldnot be a good fit for Carey Business School?

A: "Timid doesn't play wellhere," then CBS might not be the best fit. We like leaders andproactive students, especially in some of our newer programs. Additionally, there are a few specializations or industries that we do not necessarily claimto be our forte. We focuson several industries/verticals: Health Care and Life Sciences, Real Estate andinfrastructure, Financial services industry, national security, marketing, entrepreneurship, etc.

7.   Q: Hi Megan thanks for doing this. Can you speak to thekinds of things your program likes to see on the resume? I'm a fairly recentgraduate so I want to make sure my resume will be competitive in a couple ofyears. Thanks!
-Sedale

A: Depending on the program you're looking to apply to, they look/value slightly different things. Some of the programs require acertain amount of work experience. We certainly look for examples ofleadership. This could be outside of the classroom or work place, because we'realso looking for well-rounded applicants. For someone who is more of arecent graduate, more of an emphasis in the application process will be put oninternships and part-time work experience.

8.   Q: I have a questions about recommendations. I've been anentrepreneur most of my career, so I don't have a traditional supervisor toturn to for a recommendation. What have been some successful alternativerecommenders you've seen for other entrepreneur candidates?

A: As far as recommendations go, we sayprofessional. This can bea subordinate, a superior, a coworker/partner, etc. We basically want to knowwhat you're like in a business setting, so think of it as asking someone you'veworked with, and not necessarily a boss/supervisor.

9.   Given that Johns Hopkins is a worldrenowned university, I personally don't place too much weight on theaccreditation status of the Carey School. But I have read in a forum or twothat Carey, at this point, is not yet accredited. Is the Carey Business Schoolpursuing accreditation status with AACSB? If so, when do you anticipate accreditationbeing achieved?

A: Great question! As you know, JHU as auniversity is accredited. Being that the Carey BusinessSchool only opened in 2007, we began pursuing accreditation in 2009, I believe,so this is certainly something that is in the process. The accreditationprocess does take more than a few years, so I'd imagine that within the nextfew years we should have accreditation from AACSB.

10. Q: One more question: isthere a significant disadvantage applying Round 3?

A: In context of the deadlines for the Global MBA, thelonger you wait to apply, you run the risk of spots in the class/cohort fillingup, and being put on the waitlist. Additionally, for the GMBA cohort, wehave a certain amount of money set aside for merit scholarships, and the fundsbecome more competitive the longer you wait.
Generally speaking, it's a better ideato apply earlier, but do it without jeopardizing the quality of yourapplication. We also do most of our decisions on a rolling basis, so you cansubmit your application when you're ready even if it's between deadlines!

11. We've beendiscussing about this, so maybe you could give us more details about the MBAprograms that are offered at JHU Carey.
A: We have several different MBA options.
1. Our Global MBAis our 2-year, full-time MBA program, based out of our campus in Baltimore, MD
2. Flexible MBA is designed for those who work full-time and classes aretaught in the evenings (some on Saturdays) at any of our four campuses: Columbia, Rockville, Baltimore, MD andWashington, DC. It can be done in 3 academic years, but you cant take up to 6years to complete it.
3. Executive MBA is an 18 month program for senior leaders/managers whotypically have about 7-10 years of experience. You come back to Baltimore everyother month for ~1 week long residency (one of them is International).
4. MBA in MedicalServices Management (administered jointly with our School of Medicine)for those who work in the health care industry (oftentimes for nurses, physicians, senior health care administrators, etc).
