It is impractical to require all the students to study the same national curriculum before entering college. Tough on the surface cognitive skill and logic ability of student can be well cultivated by the carefully orchestrated national curriculum, the overlooking of discrepancy of different states in geography, economy and ethnic culture makes such an approach impractical.
The discrepancy of geographic environment of a country will impact on the implement of the same curriculum. Take China as an example, in south part of China, with tropical weather, swimming is very popular as a form of exercise and a kind of survival skill. Swimming pools can be found nearly in every residential district and school. It is also taken as a compulsory course for high school students. However, things were different in the north part, with frigid climate. In this part of China, ice-skating and skiing are well received by local people. More skating or skiing playgrounds are built than swimming pools. It is impossible to take swimming as a compulsory course in this place for its disfavor and lacking of facilities. So ice-skating is taken as the compulsory course in the north instead of swimming in the south. In addition, in desert regions or alpine regions, special requirements have to be formulated for the outdoor curriculums, which are quite different from those in the flat region.
Moreover, the inquire in wealth in different states of a country may limit the making of the curriculum, which is relative to new technology, like computer science. In most wealthy states, computer has become quite popular and it is possible and necessary to make the curriculum about computer science. Whereas, in the poor states, local education institutions have no adequate funds to build the computer rooms, let alone hire teachers on these curriculums. The enforcing national curriculum may be result in higher tuition which those poor students in local areas can not be able to afford.
Finally, in a multicultural society, the same national curriculum may become the block of culture development, especially the minatory culture. Different ethnic communities should be given the opportunity to preserve and promote their traditional cultures. The main approach of culture development among students is education. And the curriculums of ethnic cultures are better designed by local education communities for they get a further awareness of local cultures. Minatory students may poorly understand their culture without the special curriculum on their ethnic culture. On the other hand, the inheritance of ethnic culture is weaken.
These are only three cases of why the requirement is unrealistic. Before paying serious attentions to regional difference in geography, finance and race, blindly requiring all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college is not an advisable approach.
