93 Unfortunately, in contemporary society, creating an appealing image has become more important than the reality or truth behind that image.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.
In contemporary society, with increasingly rapid pace of life, people are overwhelmed by a myriad of various kinds of information. It seems that only by creating an appealing image can one impress people. In contrast, the truth behind the image appears to be of little significance. It is true that a pleasing image helps attract people’s attention, especially when one wants to win others’ favor in formal situations. However, if one decides to keep a positive image for a long time, an agreeable reality behind the image is as indispensible as an appealing image.
Admittedly, keeping an attractive image means more opportunities to be provided, larger potential to be favored or even be recognized by others. To some extent, what people saw is the impression one left on them. To make this point clear, an appropriate example is not far to find . In formal social events, there are great possibilities that people prefer to associate with those who wore tailored suits and behaved courteously instead of those who dressed slovenly and behaved vulgarly. Even though one may be charming, humorous and intelligent after the in-depth understanding from others, there are few chances that one can show these appealing characteristics since people might be of little willingness for more communication.
Moreover, for politicians, an appealing image plays an important role in assisting them winning more support and convincing people to support them. A dashing look and a positive public image can be more persuasive sometimes than the real talent and ability. Take presidential elections for instance, during the presidential campaigns, the public image of presidential candidates basically determine whether the candidates will come into power in the end. As cognition of the image is the most direct and easiest way for voters to evaluate potential ability of the presidential candidates, the image influences voters’ decisions magnificently. Therefore, an appealing image is indeed meaningful in many aspects of our life.
Nevertheless, everything has its consequences. An appealing image without appealing reality behind the image will give rise to tricky problems. Apart from people’s frustration or even anger after they realizing the fact is not as superb as the image presented. For example, false advertising usually present an unbelievably perfect image of products. However, the real products may not as good as they are advertised. In this situation, more disgruntled consumers are, more detrimental effects they will bring to the business of the company that uses false advertising. Worse still, victims of the misleading advertising may even file a lawsuit thus the company may suffer great loss or even face harsh penalties.
As far as I’m concerned, neither an appealing image nor the true reality behind the image can be neglected. Creating agreeable images helps unearth the true reality while the truth behind the image gives people deeper and more conclusive understanding of the whole thing. It is irreproachable to try to create a image as good as possible. However, there should not be a huge gap between the image and the reality. |
