I know it is a paralle structure concerning "not...but...".
why cannot "are" be omitted?
"not the products of natural selection, but simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments"不是很平行对称么？

我觉得是中间插入了非限定性定语从句后整个句子后面很多如果不补出are的话句子有点失去平衡结构也不明确了

首先搞清楚but are simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments 是在和那个部分在并列，其实他是与because they enhance reproduction or survival 并列的，虽然 they enhance 但是（they ）are。

这是个not。。。but结构，如果照你所说，那这句话不是很奇怪么？

这个不是not But 结构，如果是not but 结构的话， because they enhance reproduction or survival 必须是插入语啊，但是 because 后面的加的是一个完整的句子啊，不是插入语结构啊，所以我说they enhance reproduction or survival, but are simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments.是一个完整的句子，如果像你所说的not but 结构，那么的确 are 是不应该加的，they are not A but B。但是你忽略了中间插入的不是插入语，是because的结构。不知道这样讲是不是清楚了~

我只能从语法角度解释啊，我试着从逻辑角度吧：他指出生物特征不是 natural selection 的产物，因为尽管生物特征使他们得以繁殖和生存（前者是在作者是在让步，个人觉得繁殖和生存就是natural selection 的方式），但是他们这些生物的特征是与其他革命性变化随机带来的副产品。

难道我不能理解为这些特征，因为。。。，不是自然的选择，而仅仅是其他变革性发展随意选择出来的副产品么？

你这样理解按逻辑来讲不错啊，但是 because。。。。。这个完整的句子不是插入语，一个完整的句子怎么能突然插在你所理解的 not 。。。but 。。这个完整结构的句子中呢？即一个完整的句子不能插入另一个完整的句子中，所以依据这一点，because 带领后面的 they enhance， but are.... 后面整个部分啊， they enhance 后面的部分是作者做的一个让步，有尽管的意思，但是后面有了but，前面就不需要加了 although啊。这样讲应该懂了吧~
