答案是D。

首先排除A,B。

然后C,D中double为谓语动词，不是应该在前头加连词比如and吗？

反而E可以选择，因为double可作形容词，后置修饰 a number。

But in C, D, E, if "double" was really an adv, then 它后头不能跟所谓的宾语吧？刚翻过字典，大概算得上懂了。

C,D中的double是det（限定词，挺少见的），等于twice as much or as many as。直接代进句子中就通了。

如果B改成twice as many as in 1977，也就對了

yes, dumble is adj here. In Oxford dictionary, dumble is explained as "twice as many as", perfect here

E is unidiomatic

我觉得如果D中的double真是adj的话不太通，因为adj前置修饰名词时，冠词理应放在adj之前的（e.g. the lovely cat)，即应为 the double figure for 1977。不知道这样说法对不对？望指正！
