Woven baskets characterized by a particulardistinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinityof the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have beenmade only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discoveredsuch a " alean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the BrimRiver from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancientPaleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found.Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean.

While it may be true that so-called Paleanbaskets were not uniquely Palean, the author's argument does not provides cogent evidences to prove this assertion. This argument is rife with holes and assumptions,and thus, not strong enough to persuade the readers.
Base on the information that the Brim Riveris very deep and broad nowadays, and it was not easy for the ancient Paleans to cross it. If the characteristic of this river has not changed too much and its depthand width are keeping constant, this may be true. For example, the ground near the river and bottom of it is so solid that after tens of thousands of years,the depth and width of this river are never changed by the nature. But if this assumption is not true, which implies that Brim River in the ancient time was neither deep nor broad, the conclusion deduced from it may not be true. Consequently, the ancient Paleans could crossed this river with their unique baskets very easilyand sale them to other people.
Additionally, the author implies that no ancient Palean have crossed the Brim River because no Palean boats have beenfound and they could only reach the other side of the river by boat. While Palean boats as a strong and direct evidence have not been found yet, other things,such as the stone tools for boats manufactory, may help us to prove the existence of Palean boats even though we have not found it. So maybe crossing the riverby boat is reasonable and practical for ancient Palean.
Furthermore, the author reach his conclusion with the limitation that Palean baskets can only be transmitted to the other side of the river by face to face deals between Palean and their neighbors.But unfortunately, despite of this method, there were a lot of ways with which other people can get the Palean baskets. For example, they can be brought toother places by tourists who visited Palean villages one day in the ancient time and they also can be taken by businessman who wanted to earn money fromthis beautiful thing. Unless the author provide more cogent evidence, I can not believe that Palean baskets could be make by other people.
Palean baskets may be not unique Palean andthe author's argument is reasonable in some aspects, however, more detailed evidence and logical analysis are needed to persuade the readers. |
