一道关于代词指代和省略的老题

(B) Although partially destroyed, the archaeologists had inferred
(C) Although it had been partially destroyed, the archaeologists were able to infer
(D) Partially destroyed though it had been, the archaeologists had been able to infer
(E) Destroyed partially, the archaeologists were able to infer
今天又看了一遍新东方那本语法书，之前这题都没看懂。书上答案选c. 但是在网上搜了一下发现选D，这道题答案究竟是什么？

关于代词指代中不是说“当从句先于主句出现时，从句主语如为代词，它们应优先指代主句中的主语。”

按照C、D选项，补全it，是因为it 想要指代inscription,可是补全以后it 不仍然还指代archaeologists吗？

真的很困惑~~~

选择C吧，首先根据逻辑主语来判断，ABE都是错误的；再根据时态+逻辑含义，D怎么可能主句past perfect从句也是past perfect呢？肯定是一前一后。。。。LZ说的it指代，不会有问题，因为如果是指代the archaeologists，不可能是it（复数+指代人——不可能用it啊亲），其实系分析一下，你会发现it使用的原因，就是为了保证不会造成错误修饰逻辑主语。
