答案是D，我的问题是：
1. being convinced that这里是不是修饰colleagues的？这关系到为什么being在这里是错误的，我的理解是being结构在这里做colleagues的后置定语，说的是她的同事正在相信什么，所以是错的，如果改成contrary to many of her colleagues who were convinced that..感觉就是对的

2. C的主干： contrary to her colleagues, Barbara....看到别的帖子上有人质疑contrary能不能修饰人（比如不能说“我”和“你”相反，只能说“我的意见”和“你的意见”相反），这点没有人回答，所以想在这里问一下大家的意见

you should avoid "being" when expressing the IDENTITY or CHARACTERISTICS of some individual or thing. this is because "being" is usually unnecessary in such cases; there are simpler modifiers (such as appositives) that, while absolutely impossible to use in spoken language, are better in written language.
example:
being a cigar aficionado, john has strong opinions on when to use single-guillotine cigar cutters rather than double-guillotine cutters. --> bad.

2. contrary to

contrary to X, Y
the 'X' in your writeup must be a noun, or a phrase that stands in for a noun (as in 'contrary to what they had told me, ...')

parallelism is not required. one reputable dictionary (i can't remember which, off the top of my head) lists 'contrary to orders, the soldier left camp' as an example, in which 'soldier' and 'orders' are clearly not meant to be logically parallel.

in extremely formal english usage, 'contrary to' should probably be used only as an adjective. for instance:
the financial advisor's advice, contrary to all his previous recommendations, was that his clients should liquidate their holdings in company x.
in this sentence, 'contrary to...' is an adjective phrase that modifies 'advice'.
in extremely formal usage, some experts would be uncomfortable with the soldier example above, preferring to replace it with a genuine adverbial construction such as 'in defiance of orders, ...'

contrary to 作为形容词，表示与..相反
一般来说是不形容人的
因为确实无法与人相反

另外关于being，我记得之前看到过有人说如果being在句子中可以省略的话，那就以省略后的句子为正确答案，感觉和你举得例子比较像

另外关于contrary,我查到的字典上给的句子也确实不是平行的，eg. The government's actions are contrary to the public interest
但是没有找到例句跟OG上这个句子一样拿人和人来比较的，以后看来还是尽量避免这个用法

不要对being这么粗暴..

being也有正确的句子
尤其是强调正在进行中的意思

以下是OG解释里出现过的

1. OG12-18解释
Logical predication; Grammatical construction
This sentence compares how efficiently plants and fungi acquire carbon and convert it into sugars. The sentence construction needs to make clear that plants and fungi are the two topics being compared, and it must also clarify that in the form of carbon dioxide refers to carbon rather than to either plants or fungi.

总之要表达 ongoing 的属性的话还是可以用being

以后边做题边留心吧~我前几天才看到一题正确选项里是用being的

但是Ron 这个总结比较到位

oh yeah, by the way: the principal reason that 'being' is acceptable here is because it is essential for the verb 'bred' which is used in the passive voice. you can't construct the passive voice without some form of the verb 'to be'.

in problems using 'being' in a non-passive voice construction, the answer choices with 'being' are usually wrong.
