It is widely acknowldeged that the teachers play a significant role in education. When it comes to how much should pay to teachers’, some one point out to judge their salary should base on their academic performance. This suggestion at first glance applicable, what we need to do is just to set up criteria. However there are many things need to be further studied.
Let me take one of the most famous teachers in the history Confucius as an exmaole. If we judge his salary according the the quantity of students he taught, it seems ridiculous. If the more students he taught, the more salary he will get, it seems students are similar to the products produced by a worker. Then the holy spirit of teahcer is tarnished. The reason why all of us admire Confucius is for his great contribution to our education and had cultivated a lot of outstanding and characterized students. So when juading a teacher’s performance we should fully consider many aspects.
In the first place, we need to decide what kind of critiera is reasoanble and useful thorugh which we can equally evaluate the teachers’ performance. Suppose we pay salaries to the teachers only according to the students’ average scores or enrollment rate, it is easily implemented but worthless to motivate teachers. As it over emphasize the importance of students’ score while overlook their comprehensive development. Some teachers who care more about their personal academic performance are likely to compromise the effort of teaching students other aspects. Then the victim is the students who are very talented in other aspects. Once what the teachers focus is just how to improve the score, the the original purpose of education is violated.Additionally, it is harmful for teachers’ creativity to flourish. They are likely to be limited if their performance is only judged through number. What is worse, the future of a nation will be seriously influenced by it. It is unimaginable a nation is full of students whose creativity is deteriorated.
After fully considering all the problems exist, what is applicable is to do a tracking log of some aspects of academic performance like the exam score, competition rate, entrollment rate or so on. But these targets should not directly link to the salary of teachers. Only when there are some serious issues occur, these records can help to adjust the performance of teachers. Furthermore, we can try to find some more scientific norms like how many excellent students have the teacher cultivated within ten years or what is the feedback of their students to evaluate the teachers’ outcomes. It seems more reasoanble to fairly assess the teachers’ performance.
To sun up, once the teachers’ performance is fairly evaluated, it is helpful for teachers to put enough effort on cultivating students. Then it is likely there are many different talented people who are good at various fieltds, but all of them could make great contribution to the society.
