Government officials should rely on their own judgment rather than unquestioningly carry out the wills of the people whom they serve.
The speaker states that government official should rely on their own judgment instead of carrying out the will of the people indiscriminately. Though carrying out of the will of any group in an indiscriminate fashion is dangerous, a government that completely relies on decisions made internally while ignoring the people is synonymous to dictatorship and tyranny.
The main function of any government is to serve its people, whose wills should be placed first priority of that government. Officials may claim that since they have more information on national or international issues they could better determine what is good for the country. People in society, however, are not oblivion to the problems they face. Sometimes interests of the government differ from those of the people; and under such circumstances the government should respect the people and take their interests into consideration.
During the 1960’s, the U.S. government was trapped in a gruesome war with Vietnam. Thousands of young men died in a failed effort to eradicate communism in a foreign country. Many, especially the younger generation and the injured veterans, started questioning the cause of the war and asked for peace. At the beginning the government ignored such protests and insisted on sending more enforcement to Vietnam. The peaceful demonstrations soon escalated into violent unrest in some cities. The government finally decided to withdraw troop from Vietnam, yielding to public interests in peace. That period of conflict between war and peace has been documented in many movies and songs, as a representation of the American freedom and a government that listens to its people at last.
A counter example to the U.S. government is the former Soviet Union, whose government was in control of an elite group not elected by the people. The government of Soviet Union attempted to modulate a Utopian society according to Marxism. Individual freedom and happiness were supposed to be secondary to the collective benefit of the country, albeit the fact that in its last decade the “collective benefits” usually represented profit for the elite group running the government. Such systematic ignorance of public interest led to the ultimate deterioration of the Soviet Union, and in 1990 Moscow announced annulation of communism.
In a democratic society, the people select officials who will serve the public and uphold the interests of the people. Any government that bypasses public opinion in decision making will as a result lose the faith from its people and thus support. This phenomenon is best addressed by Abraham Lincoln, “ that a government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth". |
