Governments should not fund any scientific research whose consequences are unclear.

The author contends that any scientific research without unclear and controversial consequence should not be funded by the government while I generally disagree with the assertion. After all, most scientific research is worthy to be found, even though others are really not. My reason for the issue can be listed as fallows.
Initially, the essential of scientific research is to explore the unknown which reflects the consequence of a research must be controversial and unclear. It is meaningless if we can accurately predict the conclusion before we research and as all we know that a lot of scientific achieving come from some accident during a research such like the discovery of antibiotics. Secondly, the main purpose of scientific research is to solve the problem which we have or will be confronted in life and service for creat a better life. For example, we can easily realize that the advance of transportation highly convenient our travel from a place to another. Obviously, it is logical to pay some money for concur the disadvantages and bring advantages in our life. Moreover, scientific research is a sequential process that is never been interrupted through the history of human civilization which means the conclusion of a research that is useless or harmful now will eventually be used in future research. Even when the research turns out to be a fiasco, at least we know which way is blocked and how we can move further.
Nevertheless, it does not mean that government should fund any scientific research, since some researchs are apparently will straight to a detrimental ending which will hurt people or exert a deleterious influence on the peace of the world. Research of biochemistry weapon is an obvious example that the government should not support which cannot take any benefit or profit to human being except accomplish some dominator's aggression. However, some purpose of research should be funded while others in the same research should not be. When we focus our attention to the research of nuclear energy we will recognize that the aim of nuclear energy research for product and provide clean energy to family and factory is disputed should be found and for a nuclear weapon is of cours should not. It is depended on the government and society to guide the direction of scientific research.
In sum, to develop our society and civilization, our goverment should widely fund variate scientific research which consists to improve people' life rather hurt the development of our country or threaten other counties even the consequence is controversial and obscure. As long as we handle the research to a benefit and profit direction it will not bring malign effect to our life. |
