Students should always question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.
The author asserts that skeptical thinking should always be taken in to the study of students instead of accepting what they are taught passively. While, from some aspect, this assertion overstates the significant of skeptical thinking by using the word "always" and did not constrain the range of students, I generally agree with the author's assertion.
It is an observable fact that skeptical thinking plays a critical role in the long term of the development of among all subjects including science, art and law. The knowledge system of science especially physics is establishing on questioning the old principle without a stop. People discovered the fact that the earth is not center of the universe through observation by inventing a new device such as universal telescope after questioning the older authoritative theory that the earth is the center of the universe. If our ancestor never question this false theory, maybe we can never understand other mystery phenomenon of the gigantic space above the titanic ground let along the prevalent founding of the principle of gravity which concludes by Newton-the most famous physicist in the science history-and the invention of the space shuttle which can bring astronauts to space and showing the actual view of space to us.
To have skeptical thinking is also exerted a far-reaching to students who are acquiring knowledge for that they are anticipated to use knowledge they learned instead to become a machine merely record them. There is an old saying in ancient China tells students that learning without thinking is useless and harmful by the great educationist and ideologist Confusius. Moreover, a student who can only accept knowledge passively and without question them cannot have wildly innovation in his future study and career particularly for the college student who is acquiring a large amount of controvercial and unjustified theory which maybe fallacy after persistent questioning and demonstrating. College students should be rigorously to keep asking "Why," and "Why not" when they confront new theories and hypothesis to bring the exact truth to light.
Nevertheless, things become different when it happens on primary students or others who are admitted low education, since what they learn is almost common sense and basic theory which are considered as an axiom without any necessary of skeptic. Primary students will become cynical and difficult to get further education or other detrimental conterproductive if they are question these basic principles.
To sum up, skepticism is quite valuable for the advancement of human civilization, especially students are supposed to question but not simply accept what they learn. Consequently, skeptical thinking should be encouraged among all but elementary levels of education. |
