Is the main benefit of the study of historyto dispel the illusion that people living now are significantly different frompeople who lived in earlier times? As far as I am concerned, it is an involvedquestion that cannot be simply accepted or rejected.
A quick review of history reveals thatpeople living now are significantly different from people who lived in earliertimes. It is hard for people who lived in the seventeenth century to image thatpeople, living far away each other, can communicate with each other by mobilephone. Moreover, the innovation of the Internet changes the way people live,think and work by providing an accessible approach to search the informationeasier. From this perspective, the people's living standard has been improvedsignificantly, contrary to the people who lived in earlier times.
Furthermore, people are faced withintricate and sophisticated problems which the people who lived in old timesnever recognize. For example, the excessive exposure of carbon dioxide is acrucial problem that every government officials and public cannot neglect.Scientists from fields of physics, chemistry, economics, political science andother subjects discuss and try to find an accessible approach to solve theproblem.
However, people, to some extent, do notchange too much. Students, nowadays, still have to get up early to go toschool, and they need do homework as well. Employees have to work for eight hoursfrom Monday to Friday, and they have to get along with their employers well.The president has to deal with various kinds of items and issues and keep adecent figure to the public. People have to keep their social roles as before,and the only difference is the appearance of the new roles and thedisappearance of the old ones.
From more generally, people living now areapproximately equivalent to the people who lived in earlier times because the people’sintrinsic characteristic does not change. People still consider that it is goodto be honest, loyal and diligent, and it is wrong to tell a lie to people, robother's properties and murder others. Jin Yong, a famous Chinese writer, oncesaid that the kung fu in his novel is inaccessible in real life; however thegood characteristic such as kindness, braveness and love he wrote isaccessible. As what he said, the dream people hold, the justice people persist andhappiness people pursuit cannot be changed as the time passes away.
To sum up, although people's living stylehas changed a lot with the development of science and technology, the internalcharacteristic people hold is unchanged. |
