In thismemo, the vice president of Quiot Manufacturing points out that the corporationshould shorten each of our three work shifts by one hour so that employees willget adequate amounts of sleep. To corroborate this claim, the vice presidentcites that Quiot Manufacturing had 30 percent more on-the-job accidents than atthe nearby Panoply Industries plant. In addition, the vice president also citesthat experts say that significant contributing factors in many on-the-job accidentsare fatigue and sleep deprivation among workers. At first glance, the memo appearsto be somehow plausible, close scrutiny of these evidences, however, revealsthat it tends little credible support for the vice president's claim. To beginwith, the mere fact that Quiot Manufacturing had 30 percent more on-the-jobaccidents than at the nearby Panoply Industries plant does not uphold the argument.Perhaps the protective measures of Quiot Manufacturing are not as efficient andeffectual as those of Panoply Industries Plant. If not, then the mere enactmentof shifting work hours is no guarantee of a similar result. Or perhaps theeducation level of workers of Quiot Manufacturing is quite low, thus they oftenfails to obey the requests and rules of plants. Apartfrom that, citing the proposals put forward by the expert as the evidence, thevice president concludes that fatigue and sleep deprivation significantly contributesto the on- the-job accidents. While admittedly, fatigue and sleep deprivationis a crucial element in determining on-the-job accidents, however, the vice presidentfails to account for assumption that the differences such as industry, working environmentand workers’ quality between the Quito manufacturing and the corporationresearched by the expert can be negligible and neglected. A thirdproblem with the argument is that it relies on numerous unsubstantiatedassumptions on vice president’s suggestions. One such assumption is that theworkers will utilize the redundant one hour to sleep and rest. Perhaps theworkers will play poker, or perhaps they are likely to drink beer with their colleaguesduring the break, thus such additional hour probably causes higher percentageof on-the-work accidents. Another assumption is that the total reduction ofwork hour will not induce a negative impact on productivity. It’s possible thatthe workers only work 3 hours a day and they are most efficient in the thirdhour, thus the reduction of one hour causes an extremely severe influences on theproductivity of whole manufacturing. In short, without considering and rulingout the alternative results for shifting one hour, the vice president cannotjustifiably conclude that such enactment can reduce the number of on-the-jobaccidents and thus increase productivity. To sum up, the vice president fails tovalidate the conclusion that the corporation should shorten each of our three work shifts by onehour so that employees will get adequate amounts of sleep. To solidify the argument, the vice president should provide moreconcrete evidence to demonstrate the conclusion. In addition, the vicepresident would have to rule out the above mentioned possibilities that wouldundermine the claim.
