题目是这个月的狗狗之一 The following appeared in a memorandum from the director of human resources to the executive officers of
Company X: “Last year, we surveyed our employees on improvements needed at Company X by having them rank, in order of importance, the issues presented in a list of possible improvements. Improved communications between employees and management was consistently ranked as the issue of highest importance by the employees who responded to the survey. As you know, we have since instituted regular communications sessions conducted by high-level management, which the employees can attend on a voluntary basis. Therefore, it is likely that most employees at Company X now feel that the improvement most needed at the company has been made.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
这个是我的AA处女作……
In this argument, the author concludes that employees at Company X now is likely to feel that the most necessary improvement has been made. The reasons offered to support this conclusion is that among the issued that employees have responded to the survey, improved communication between employees and management was put in the first place and the Company X has made the improvement through instituting routinely communications sessions. This argument is unconvincing for several reasons.
To begin with, the accuracy of the survey is doubtful, since no evidence has been demonstrated in the argument that the way the company X committed the survey is reasonable. Considerations such as whether the sample employees involved in the survey is representative or not and whether the employees submit their responds in anonymous should all be answered, otherwise the result of the survey is worthless, since these considerations could, directly or indirectly, affect the accuracy of the result.(是否要进一步说明不考虑两个whether的内容会如何影响accuracy)
Secondly, the author falsely assumes that whether institute regular communications sessions or not is the only decisive factor of improving communications between employees and management. However, it is not necessarily the case. For instance, is it reluctant for employees to communicate with the manager voluntarily? Or Is the manager unwilling to accept the opinions from employees? If the answers to both questions are “Yes”, the communication between the employees and management could still be less likely to be improved, so the employees will not feel the improvement.
In conclusion, the author fails to show the accuracy of the survey and to rule out other possible factors which could decide the effect of the communication improvement. To strengthen the argument, the author should provide evidence that the sample employees are reprensentative and that other than the institution of communication sessions, no factor is more decisive and influential.
