argument里面有很多的题目是类似的,不同的是写作指导。像argument5的这篇,问的是what questions should be answered.我认为整篇文章的重点应该是向作者发问,而不是指出他有什么逻辑错误,所以应该是由很多问题组成的。不晓得我这样的理解对不对,求狂拍。
5. Thefollowing appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island Gazette. "OnBalmer Island, where mopeds serve as a popularform of transportation, the population increases to 100,000 during the summermonths. To reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians, thetown council of Balmer Island should limit thenumber of mopeds rented by the island's moped rental companies from 50 per dayto 25 per day during the summer season. By limiting the number of rentals, thetown council will attain the 50 percent annual reduction in moped accidentsthat was achieved last year on the neighboring island of Seaville, when Seaville's town council enforced similar limits on moped rentals." Write a response in which you discusswhat questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether therecommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how theanswers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

In this argument, the author asserts that the towncouncil of Balmer Island should limit thenumber of mopeds rented to reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds andpedestrians. In order to strengthen the conclusion, the author provides a factthat after Seaville’s town council enforced similar limits on moped rental, theaccidents decline; some measures, for example, limit the number of moped rentedfrom 50 per day to 25 per day during summer time. However, these facts andmeasures not only fail to be a support role, but also bring more problems tomake the argument unconvinced.
Tobegin with, the author cites a comparison to support the suggestion. However, this comparison, in fact, weak the suggestion, at the same time, bringing more questioningvoices. First of all, the situation of last year was similar with this year? The same measures were effective in the neighboring island of Seaville could lead to the same results in the Balmer? In addition, the population sizeand population density of both islands, the level of transportation management, road condition information, all of the mentioned question, the author didn’tanswer. Unless the author provided enough evidences about the two islands, thecomparison is meaningless. What’smore, about “similar limits” as the author mentioned about Seaville put intoeffect. Here come the questions. The first one is on which aspect, the limitswere similar? The number of mopeds, the rent of moped or the condition ofrenting mopeds, the author failed to give enough detail information. The secondone is Seavilles limited on moped rentals meanwhile if they did other measures, such as cultivating the drivers, improving the transportation consciousness, raising fine of illegal moped. The author had done nothing about the measuresspecific taken on Seavilles.
Furthermore, the author provided a suggestion to attain the 50 percent annual reduction inmoped accidents. The suggestion seems to be plausible. However, after thinkingfurther, the suggestion was filled of unclear concept which leading readers gotquestions. In the first place, the author didn’t answer the question whatreasons caused moped accidents? Was the increasing number of population, as theauthor mentioned, the population increasing to 100,000 during the summermonths? Was the bad road condition? Was the weather? As the common senses tellsus much rain in summer time. Did the drivers or pedestrians follow the rules oftransportation? Again, what was number of accidents in a year? What was the exactlynumber of accidents happened in spring, summer, fall, winter? What was thepercentage of summer time? If the percentage was law, even Balmer Island takes the measure can’t attain the 50 percent annual reduction. Plus, theauthor had done nothing about the number of moped rental in the past, if it was24, even though by limiting the number from 50 per day to 25 per day, it wasalso meaningless. To sum up, the author used a fact about a neighboring island of Seavilles and provided a suggestion to achieve the goal attaining the 50 percent annualreduction. However, they hold no brief for the author, at the same time, againstthe original wishes. Only if the author answers the question mentioned above, the suggestion is unacceptable. 字体改不了了,可能看起来比较小
