I basically do not agree with the claim that progress requires discussion among people who have different views. Indeed, by discussing with people who have different views with us, we could learn the shortcomings of our views and make a deeper understanding , however, it does not mean in any situation there would be of no use when we discuss with the people who hold the similar views with us, and sometimes discussing with individuals having the similar views can also be useful.
Admittedly, discussing with people who have contrasting points of view can be useful to make us aware of the weakness of our views and help us form a deeper understanding. In terms of individuals, ones would often have something he or she has not considered of. And by discussing with the people who have different ideas with them, they could perfect their views and at the same time they could be aware of the downsides of their views. For example, I often have a discussion with my classmates in the class. We often change our views about the topic and always attempt to persuade others to convince our views by providing some evidences. By discussing the topic and changing our views, we often make aware of the negative and positive impacts that our views would have, then we would find some solutions to solve its negative effects. Thus, not only we know the short comings of our own views, but also we have a deeper understanding and have found the solutions to solve the problems that our views would produce.
However, it does not mean we cannot make a progress by discussing with people who have the similar views with us. For one thing, though people have the similar opinions, the levels of understanding a problem often are different. Consider teachers and students. Often they have the similar views on a problem, however, often teachers would have a deeper understanding than students due to their rich experience and knowledge. Thus, by discussing with teachers, students often could get a much more complete and comprehensive understanding, which is helpful to make students have a progress. For another, usually the best cooperative partners are people who have the similar ideas with us. In the teamwork, having the similar views , could make people have a more pleasant and friendly communication, which is beneficial to solidarity and cooperation, an indispensable element of making a progress in the teamwork. Often in the excellent football teams players tend to have similar opinions, then by discussing their views, they can keep an accord to make a plan and goal, thus they would help for each other and make a progress all together. Therefore, discussing people with similar views is also of crucial importance.
Summed up, discussing with people who have different and similar views are both useful to help us make a progress. |
