113.Claim:The surestindicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, orscientists.
Reason: Thesurest indicator of a great nation is actually the welfare of all its people.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent towhich you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claimis based

I fundamentally agree with the opinion that the welfare of all people can indicates a great nation. The achievements of the nation's rulers, artists, and scientists, as well as the diligence of the whole society, however, can also be viewed as indicators when judging if a nation is great.

When speaking of the greatness of a nation, we usually consider it a peaceful, developed and equal country. The reason why I regard the people's welfare as the measurement is primarly based on these three aspects. First of all, the welfare of all the people could indicate the stability of one nation. Comparing a country where civil wars break out frequently to the one where people live their lives happily, it's undouted that the latter has the potential to be a great nation contemprarily. Secondarily, the economy can be illustrated adequately by the well-being of people. Only in a prosperous country, can the young be equally educated, the sick guaranteed timely treatment and the jobless supplied with unemployment benefit. Otherwise, the nation that cannot afford would be full of illiteracy, illness and loafers, which would impair the efficiency of the society and make itself behind the times sooner or later. Finally, when the individual, no matter which enthic group he or she belongs to, could share the equal welfare with others, then the nation could be characterized as the real great, just as Martin Luther King had said: there will be neither rest or tranquility until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

However, we can not ignore the influence of the distinguished rulers on one nation when talking about its greatness. The achivements of rulers, can sometimes be the best representatives of a nation and their feats could conduct the future development of the country. Abraham Lincoln, one of the most outstanding presidents in American history, led the Americans to preserve the Union, while ending the Civial War and the slavery. It's hard to imagine if American can achieve so much today without Lincoln's service.

On the other hand, the contribution of science and art one nation makes to the whole world should be also taken into account when defining its greatness. President John F.Kennedy once said: Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country. Similarly, the same principle can be applied to a nation. Ancient rome, the thriving civilization that grew in the 8th century BC, is considered as a great nation. Such a class-ridden society where the rank and file could not enjoy their rights cannot match up to the democratic nation contemporarily in economic and equality. Yet, it still deserves the honour as it achieved rather high in science and art. Its various architecture, for example, involving the innovative use of concrete as the building material, has a long and deep influence in Europe constantly.

While the welfare of all the people indicates the current state of a nation, the achievements of its ruler, scienctists and artists usually signify the past prosperousness. When we appreciate a nation accomplishing both parts, we cannot overlook those ones where people are striving for their better lives and future, even if the nation might be still in poverty and its people be still on the way of pursuing the true knowledg. Any diligent nation with the good belief should be viewed as great and deserves respect of all, as we can forsee its future: a nation with visionary rules where all the people share the welfare and contribute in sicience and art to the world continuously.
2.      ruler,artists,scientists
(Abraham Lincoln)
Ask not what your country can dofor----ask what you can do for your country.
