题库NO.4

In the argument the author concludes that the price of the newspaper Mercury is to be reduced to increase its circulation and thus to attract more businesses to buy advertising space in the newspaper. At first glance, the author's claim seems to be reasonable. However, further reflection reveals that in the argument there are some flaws which make the assertion problematic,  and they need discussing further.
Firstly, the author asserts that it is the issuance of Bulge that causes the decreased circulation of Mercury. It is a typical cause-effect fallacy. It makes no sense to jump to a conclusion that A causes B just because B happens after A. There is not necessarily correlation between A and B. For example, If some day the sun rises from the east in the morning and someone wins a championship in the evening, can one say that the sun's rising from the east causes the person's winning the championship? Obviously not. Therefore, it remains questionable wether A is the cause of B.
Secondly, the author assumes that as long as the price of Mercury reduces, the circulation of Mercury will increase. However, no evidence in the argument can support such an assumption. It is likely that it is the out-of-date content of Mercury, not the price, that causes the reduction of its circulation. That means the content of Mercury no longer fits readers' taste. As a result, a reduction of price without any change in the content of Mercury may be of little use to increase the circulation. Hence, it is premature for the author to make this assumption without taking into account other factors or ruling out other possibilities.
In summary, this argument is weak. It is early for the author to jump to his conclusion unless he can show some evidence to indicate that there is cause-effect relationship between the issuance of Bulge and the decreased circulation of Mercury. Furthermore, to rule out other possibilities before making an assumption that the reduction of the price of Mercury will lead to its circulation is also necessary.
