但从词组来看 debate about sth  是可以的

debate做动词，debate whether(what/how) / debate sth with sb

debate做名词，debate about/over sth

debate做v.时,后面直接跟宾语. whether引导的句子这里可看成类似一名词从句. debate sth.

而debate做n.时,后面才能跟about.  a debate about sth.
