OG的解释认为the -ing form of a verb can be used as a noun (e.g., running is her favorite sport), but it is often awkward, particularly when used with a possessive, as in this case.

但是麦哈顿253页的给出的解释是
A noun preceding a gerund must be in the possessive case if the noun is the doer of the
action described by the gerund.
Wrong: Mike SWIMMING is the product of new coaching techniques.
Right: Mike's SWIMMING is the product of new coaching techniques.
有机体的尝试和麦克的游泳？两者是一个意思吧。
有点不解。

swimming的名词就是swimming
所以Mike's swimming很正确

但是，trying作为名词？似乎没这么一说，或者很不地道。意思上，是用attempt这个名词。
类似这样的例子有很多，就说英语里存在这个名词词汇，那么就不用v-ing作为名词。比如：

Her performance
就不说成"her performing"
