This issue about whether the analysis of the trends of the youth is the best approach for a good understanding of the contemporary culture is fairly a complicated one to discuss. I concede that it is a good idea to study the culture of a time by targeting the most representative populations, and certainly the young people are of special characters, allowing them to serve as a good reference for a skim of the culture of their time. However, the “analysis-on-youth” approach only is not enough for a comprehensive understanding of the contemporary culture. Other components and populations also count.
Admittedly, there are some characters within the young people which make them representative for an understanding of the contemporary culture. As we know, they are active, energetic, creative, fond of novel issues and challenges, and full of power. These characters of the youth always make the trends of them a salient impact on the whole civilization. Take the pop music as an example. The pop songs, which are favored by the youth, can almost be heard everywhere, along the streets, in the cafes, or in the shopping malls. The young people are always witnessed to wear earplugs, shake their heads, and hum songs along the road. The TV shows are full of the pop songs and shows, and logos can be found in every station of the city. Once I was going shopping with my mother, even she could easily detect the singer of songs playing in the mall. In view of this fact, the societal civilization of a time, especially about the fashion, pop music, and art designs, can strongly be influenced, even dominated, by the trends of the young. Therefore, the “analysis-on-the youth” approach sometimes does make sense to portray the contemporary culture.
The influence from the young people on the culture can be interpreted as some fresh power, some new things, which are out of the fresh visions of the youth different from the elderly. Therefore, the young people can always bring about changes, leading the tendency of the direction of evolution of our contemporary culture. However, the differences the youth make may not always be accepted as a part of the culture.
In every time, we witness some activities of the young people are purely out of impulses and irrationality. For example, the juveniles do things like joining the gangs, doing drugs, or other issues are somehow just for seeking fun, or immediate stimuli, or considering that would be cool. After a period of time, most of them will regret such choice and turn back to the normal life. Such fleeting trends of the youth are purely out of repelling sense and seeking attentions from others instead of reflecting the contemporary culture.
In addition, the major part of the civilization of a time is still represented by the elderly people, who inherit the original traditions passed by from the formers, and fulfill the content of the current culture with their living experiences. So it could be too partial by dismissing this part and solely applying the analysis of the young people for seeking the new changes to tell what the contemporary culture is exactly. Different from the young people, the elderly could be more experienced and living a stable life. We can witness their contribution to the contemporary culture in the normal daily life: the food and diet they have every day, the social etiquettes they commit, their values of raising children and taking care of families, their hard-working spirits, and so forth. All these issues should be counted into the understanding of the culture. Given the fact that these people are the main populations who pay taxes, vote and undertake all responsibilities of the society, I consider their lives should also be taken into account the analysis to the contemporary culture understanding.
In retrospect, the analysis of the trends of the youth makes sense somehow in the understanding of the contemporary cultures due to the new and meaningful part they bring into the culture. However, considering the non-sustained part of the trends of the youth, like the behaviors purely out of irrationality, and the contribution of the elderly people, this approach is definitely not enough for a full picture of the contemporary civilization.
