几个题

问了一个在ACT搞SAT阅读测试的老米.下面是他的回答,

1)   Only seven people this century have been killed by the great white
shark, the man-eater of the movies-less than those killed by bee stings.
A.  movies-less than those
B.  movies-fewer than have been
C.  movies, which is less than those
D.  movies, a number lower than the people
E.  movies, fewer than the ones
(I think both B and E are right though I prefer B more. Could you tell me
which one is better and why?)

B is the correct response.  "Fewer than" refers to the subject of the
sentence...those unfortunate souls consumed by great white sharks. In E "the ones" makes this an incorrect response. It is also grammatically dreadful.

(2)   Bihar is India's poorest state, with an annual per capita income of
$111, lower than in the most impoverished countries of the world.
(A) lower than in
(B) lower than that of
(C) and lower than that of
(D) which is lower than in
(E) which is lower than it is in
(The key is B. However I think "that" in B shoule be "those", because you
must get more than one "per capita income" from  "countries", thus  choice
A seems right. Am I right?)
B is correct.  It is using a comparative, contrasting a state in India with
the world's poorest countries  The per capita income is referring only to
the country of Bihar, thus it is singular.

(3)     New techniques in thermal-scanning photography, a process that
records radiation from surface areas, makes it possible to study the
effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river in greater detail than ever
before.
(A) makes it possible to study the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a
river in greater detail than ever before
(B) make it possible to study, in greater detail, the effects of
calefaction, or warming, of a river than ever before
(C) have made it possible to study in greater detail than ever before the
effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river
(D) make possible the study of the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a
river in greater detail than it ever was before
(E) has made it more possible than ever before to study in greater detail
the effects of calefaction, or warming, of a river
(The key is C. But I think D is right. Plus in choice C "...than ever
before the effect..." can cause misunderstanding that is "before the
effects..." instead of "study the effects...")
It should be C. The effect is in reference to the calefaction of a river.
In addition, the words "in greater detail" need to be adjacent to that to
which they refer.  Thus, it is correct to say "study in greater detail..."
rather than separating it as in D. (I hope this makes sense. )

(4)      The man was always aware, sometimes proudly and sometimes
resentfully, that he was a small-town Midwesterner who was thrust into a
world that was dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more polished
people than him.
(A) who was thrust into a world that was dominated by wealthier,
better-educated, and more polished people than him
(B) who had been thrust into a world that was dominated by more wealthy,
educated, and polished people than him
(C) who had been thrust into a world dominated by wealthier,
better-educated, and people more polished than he was
(D) thrust into a world dominated by more wealthy, educated, and polished
people than him
(E) thrust into a world dominated by wealthier, better-educated, and more
polished people than he
(The key is E. Agree, but still one questione: If I put "he" instead of  "him" in choice B, would choice B be right?)
If you used "he" rather than "him," it would be technicially correct, but
ponderous and unwieldy.  "that," "Who had been,"  and "than" make the sentence
somewhat redundant.  In tests of this nature, one is generally looking for
a simpler construction.

A huge flying reptile that died out with the dinosaurs some 65
million years ago, the Quetzalcoatlus had a wingspan of 36 feet, believed
to be the largest flying creature the world has ever seen.

(A) believed to be
(B) and that is believed to be
(C) and it is believed to have been
(D) which was, it is believed
(E) which is believed to be
This is a badly-written sentence, without a correct answer.  In my
understanding, the correct answer should read "and is believed to be (or
have been) the largest flying creature the world has ever seen. However, I
will default to the second best answer, which is C

B is the correct response.  "Fewer than" refers to the subject of the

我想他是说B省略的"those"指人,但"The ones"可指所有(包括人和其他)
