To understand the most importantcharacteristics of a society, one must study its major cities. It’s reasonable for us to choose major cities to study whenwe want to know about a society, which is just like we will choose the majorcities to visit when we decide to travel within one country. Major cities can be the representatives for a societybecause lots of people are gathering there and the people there can tell ussomething about a country. Lots of aspirant people are willing to come to bigcities to make a better life and they believe that there will be moreopportunities and chances for them if they live in major cities. So that’s whyyou can see in some countries, there can be a surge towards big cities. Forexample, in Shanghai, when you walk on the street and listen to people’s talk, youwill find people who have different accent. They come from various places. SoShanghai is a miniature of China, which is worthwhile to study if one wants toknow more about China. Also major cities usually have the highest level of economicpower, medical power and educational power within a country because thegovernments are willing to give big cities lots of financial support. So whenpeople study major city, they can know the brightest side of a country, whichof course is part of the important characteristics of a society. However, people cannot just focus on one angle to know moreabout a society, they need to see the whole picture. We cannot say that NewYork is equal to the U.S.A, because major city is just part of a country ratherthan a whole picture. Peripheral or small cities have very unique traditions, which is precious to a society. Once I have been to Tibet that is a peripheralcity in China. This city is totally different with Shanghai. You cannot seelots of high buildings there and prairies occupy most of the room. Peopleliving there never in a hurry and they spend lots of time with the sheep andcows. The lifestyle there is special, but it’s part of the characteristics ofChina. Another example is a small town called Bruges in Belgium. The smallplace became well known with the release of the film called <In Bruges>.People get fascinated with the beautiful scene there, which is totally not thesame picture with the industrialized city we used to think Belgium is. Further more some times major cities are just a superficialdemonstration of a country. In China, there is a huge gap between rich peopleand poor people, so living in major city and living in poor place cannot be compared. In small towns in Gansu, there even isn’t enough food for everyone to get full.If people only study major cities, they will never know there are also lots ofpeople starving. So major cities and peripheral cities must be combinedtogether to study when one want to know deeply about a society and both partsare all key to the understanding process.
