新语法笔记 由152. (OG10-245) (OG11-95)引申出来的知识点:

4. 关于misplaced modifier, dangling modifier, squinting modifier的区别
:

Traceback: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/modifiers.htm

(1)MISPLACED MODIFIER: Some modifiers, especially simple modifiers — only, just, nearly, barely — have a bad habit of slipping into the wrong place in a sentence. (In the sentence below, what does it mean to "barely kick" something?)

Confusion: He barely kicked that ball twenty yards.

Repair Work: He kicked that ball barely twenty yards.

第一句: barely(adv.)修饰 kicked (v.)
第二句:barely修饰 twenty吧
             twenty在longman中查到的是数词:
                                       the number 20:

a small village twenty miles from Nairobi

I'm nearly twenty (=20 years old).

这么说副词可以修饰数词??还是我理解错了?

理解不透,恳求大家的帮助。
谢谢!

我认为这只是一个副词的位置问题啊,副词就是形容动词(kicked)的,怎么能去修饰数词(twenty)呢。另外,你索引的资料也说得很清楚了

The issue of the proper placement of "only" has long been argued among grammarians. Many careful writers will insist that "only" be placed immediately before the word or phrase it modifies. Thus "I only gave him three dollars" would be rewritten as "I gave him only three dollars." Some grammarians, however, have argued that such precision is not really necessary, that there is no danger of misreading "I only gave him three dollars" and that "only" can safely and naturally be placed between the subject and the verb. The argument has been going on for two hundred years.
既然这arguments has been going on for 200 years, 我也就不草率的解释了。
