考点是 fainter 是 faint 的比较式，所以后面一定要跟 than。

不过这题的答案是错误的。twenty times fainter 的只能是 light，不能是 sources，因为 faint 和 bright 都是观察光的结果，不是观察光源。光源到底是光还是暗，和离光源的距离有关，所以不是 intrinsic property。

既然比较的是光，那么 than 后面跟着的就是 light，应该是 that 而不是 those。正确的句子应该是：Once positioned in space, the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources twenty times fainter than that that can be detected by ground-based instruments.
注意，是连用两个 that 的。不是我打错了

楼上的意思是D还是没有错，这里可以使用fainter修饰sources?

按照楼主的解释，那么C也是错的啊，少了一个that

语法上我觉得 cd都没错
楼上说c少that, 定语从句的that我记得是可以省略的，比如 punch the person you hate
至于这个faint 到底形容光还是光源，其实都有道理
这题本身就挺古老的，题本身存在点质量问题，大家讨论论考点就好了

感觉这道题还是考逻辑修饰的，但是答案说those指代sources，感觉很牵强
如果不明白句意，似乎就很难排查了
不知道能否找到别的类似例证

定语从句that 可以省略是在“that”在从句中做宾语的情况，这里做的是主语，所以不能省

到底有没正确答案啊，我选的C。但是貌似题目是说TELECOPE和ground-based instruments 从光源中捕捉光的能力差别。所以是比较光源投射到那个仪器上被细微分辨的能力？

同意，比较的是光源(sources)，非光(light)

我觉得D有问题，介宾短语比较应该是than from those
