The reasons for yesterday’s sharp rise in the stock market were much the same as that behind last week’s rally: a surge in the economy to a 5.6 percent annual growth rate and improved corporate earnings balanced by the lack of signs of inflationary pressure.

这里是比较结构比较对象是yesterday’s sharp rise in the stock market 的原因和last week’s rally的原因

those指代复数名词就是前边的reasons

D有两个错误首先for不对这里是原因比较而不是for后的内容

其次that指代单数名词所以不对

A,that指代不清

B,those只能指代reasons，OK

C,what was第一很啰嗦，第二，was单数不对

D,for在前面，that感觉好像去指代了sharp rise，意思就不对了

E,they were这样的结构使比较变成了The reasons...were much the same as they were (much the same) behind last week's rally...--personal opinion.

those 后面还有修饰对象，不会出现代指前面的歧义

这个句子的比较对象是yesterday’s sharp rise in the stock market 的原因和last week’s rally的原因。
两个不同的原因，是两个不同的对象，要分开指代；如果使用They 指代，前后两处合指一个词；本句实际是指，两个不同现象的原因，具有相同的根源。
The reasons…were the same as those behind last week’s rally. behind last week’s rally是修饰those的词语；the reasons….those… 这些原因，，，那些原因，，，
Chinese people are not the same as they were before. Chinese people are not the same (people) as they were before.
这句话前后所指都是chinese people，可以使用they指代. 中国人现在，，，他们过去，，，
