18. GWD27-Q18:

The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft will orbit the asteroid Eros for a year, slowly moving closer to the surface of the object to make ever more precise measurements that scientists hope will enable them to understand how the solar system formed some four billion years ago.

  1. to make ever more precise measurements that scientists hope will enable them to

  2. to make ever more and more precise measurements, which scientists are hoping to enable them

  3. for making ever more precise measurements, and scientists hope that they will be able to

  4. with the purpose of making more precise measurements than ever, and which scientists hope will enable them to

  5. in order to make more precise measurements than it ever did, and scientists are hoping they will be able to

   Answer: C

  1. to make ever more precise measurements that scientists hope will enable them to (that功用模糊;them 指涉不清)

  2. to make ever more and more precise measurements, which scientists are hoping to enable them(ever more and more加強語氣 但改變句意;現在式變為進行式,語意改變;them指涉不清)

  3. for making ever more precise measurements, and scientists hope that they will be able to(for V-ing = to V;

  4. with the purpose of making more precise measurements than ever, and which scientists hope will enable them to(which應當刪除;them指涉不清;with the purpose of不簡潔)

  5. in order to make more precise measurements than it ever did, and scientists are hoping they will be able to(in order to = to不簡潔;現在式變為進行式,語意改變)

   Answer: C

D.    with the purpose of making more precise measurements than ever, and which will enable scientists to ...

D.    with the purpose of making more precise measurements than ever, which will enable scientists to ...

1. 冗余: 可以说ever more或者是more and more。但不可以说是ever more and more

2. 修饰: measurements, which scientists are hoping to enable them这个定语从句使 "enable" 有两套修饰: measurements, which和them

应该是measurements, which scientists are hoping to enable
