The best answer is E. I do not understand why not they will require ... and will gain, since it is conditional clause: if ..., they will. Who will help me out? Thank you.

"do" can be added, but ets may say it's wordy because the "do" doesn't help clarify anything. on the other hand, for the sentence "calves gain more fat than do those raised in confinement," do is a must because, without it, confusion may occur: comparing calves (subject) or fat (object) with calves raised in confinement.

gg，转一圈回来重新看题，找了LZM的书说，在谓语一致，比较主语时，than后面的助动词要补出。这题里面是主语一致，比较的是谓语动作，所以我想do就不需要的。不知gg觉得如何？

晕。。我的语法好菜。。

我有一个想法，可不可以是因为than前面需要比较的动作有两个，一个是require，另一个是gain，如果加了do，到底do是替代require呢，还是替代gain呢。。这不就导致了指代混乱吗？？？所以不加do了吧？？

babypace and scots MM: the key is to ensure the clarity of comparing targets. personally, i was mis-directed by LZM's book on this issue. his "axioms" only touched the surface. but ETS' fundamental is about clarity without unnecessary verbiage. there are many kinds of comparisons. i tried to make an axiom for each kind of comparisons, but it was too troublesome!
