124. Found throughout Central and South America,
sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs and
sleep 15 hours a day, moving infrequently enough
that two species of algae grow on its coat and
between its toes.
(A) sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs and
sleep 15 hours a day, moving infrequently enough
(B) sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs,
they sleep 15 hours a day, and with such
infrequent movements
(C) sloths use their long rubbery limbs to hang from
trees, sleep 15 hours a day, and move so
infrequently
(D) the sloth hangs from trees by its long rubbery
limbs, sleeping 15 hours a day and moving so
infrequently
(E) the sloth hangs from trees by its long rubbery
limbs, sleeps 15 hours a day, and it moves
infrequently enough

IMO, there are two instances that you can use present participle to modify the sentence.

1) The present participle modifies the sentence that contains a logical subject of an action. As in the case above, "sleeping 15 hrs and moving blah blah" logically modifies the subject of the action "the sloth."

2) The present participle is used to modify the entire sentence, indicating a result of a sequence of action. For instance,
"The price of beef has gone up 50% percent since Nov., leading many people to speculate that the price will increase further."

For instance,
"I solved the problem, using the lasted technique. "

The action of "solving the problem" and "using the technique" happened at the same time.

"Using the latest technique, we solved the problem," and "We solved the problem, using the latest technique." Both sentences express the same meaning. As you can see, the present participle can be placed more flexible than the past participle, which often ends with "ed".
