reddydineshm: Hello Tuck

CFreeman: Hello

Nancy G.-Admissions: Welcome to the chat.  lease hold your questions while we prepare.

paulahuomba@gmail.com: Hello from Toronto

kingfalcon: Hi, folks. Thanks for your time.

Nancy G.-Admissions: Welcome.  We have a few students still logging in.  lease give us another minute and we'll get started

Nancy G.-Admissions: We are happy you are joining us today.  Let's get started!

HuangShuo: Hi. I met a problem in online application. The employer name section has 30 char limit, but my employer's name just over that limit. What shall I do? Thanks.

kvempati: Hi Nancy. I want to know how important is international experience for admissions. There's a section for it in the application!

Nancy G.-Admissions: @HuangShuo: please fill in as much as you can on the application and email tuck.admissions@tuck.dartmouth.edu with the full name and we will add it to your file

HuangShuo: Thanks Nancy.

hardikm: Hi Nancy, I had 4 managers in past 4 years and most of them know only subset of my accomplishments at work. How do I address that?

CFostera5143b: What’s the biggest misconception out there about Tuck and what’s the one thing you wish every prospective applicant knew about the MBA program?

don_pan: Hi Nancy, I am a reapplicant. Do you think it will be OK for me to apply at the Jan round? Some advised me to apply next year. What do you think?

ESilvani1c373c:
Good Afternoon! I wanted to know (from any of the current students) how living in Hanover has positively or negatively affected their career search over their MBA career. Thanks!

elina.nalibotski@gmail.com: Hello Nancy. I have a question about the application. Currently there is a question about company sponsorship of MBA (yes/no). I have reached out to my company but the decision may only be available after the application is due. Should I indicate Yes or No for sponsorship?

karenm-admissions: Hi kvempati - We are interested in learning more about your international experience and your global mindset.  However, we understand that not everyone has global experience, and that's fine.

Lesley Chin '13: Hi guys - My name is Lesley Chin and I'm a first year here at Tuck.  I grew up in Boston, though lived in NYC for the past ~5 years working as a Equity research analyst on Wall Street.  I was a Harvard '04-'05.  Here at Tuck, I participate in the Entertainment, Media  and Sports Club, the Marketing club, General Management Club and do some fun extracurriculars on the side (dancing, etc).  leasure to have all of you with us and happy answer questions!

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: Hi nancy, i am interested in meeting some tuckies to get a better feel for the school. Are there any current students or alumni you might be able to put me in touch with in the region?

Pat H - Admissions: Don Pan - you should apply when you have the strongest application to present.  You have a reapplicant essay and could address there why you are applying in January and what you have done to strengthen your candidacy since last year.

Andy Friedman T'13: Hi, my name is Andy Friedman. I'm a first year student at Tuck and was a real estate developer before coming back to school to get my MBA. At tuck I'm involved in tripod hockey, entrepreneurship, and general management. Welcome to the online chat.

Matt Gallagher (2013): Hi all. My name is Matt Gallagher. I'm a first year student from Boston. Prior to Tuck I worked in endowment management. I am involved in the consulting club, the private equity club, and Tripod Hockey at Tuck.

harshitauttam: Hi. This is Harshita from India. I gather the school helps applicants to finance their degree through loans? How difficult / easy is to get loans through this route? Is there a possibility of not getting a loan once one has got admission to the school?

KaiaDekker-2013: Hi!  I'm a first year here.  I did strategy consulting prior to Tuck, want to do technology general management past Tuck.  Here, I'm involved in the Business & Society conference, various case competitions, entrepreneurship & technoloogy clubs, and tripod hockey, among other things.  leased to be here!

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: kaia what do you absolutely love about being at tuck

Nancy G.-Admissions: @hardikm: Think about which managers know the most about the key areas of your applications (leadership, teamwork, core accomplishments that best illustrate what you will bring to the Tuck community)

kvempati: Thank you @karenm.

HuangShuo: Nancy, I got another question here. When filling the "Advanced/Graduate Degree Information

hardikm: @Nancy: Thanks for your input.

kvempati:
I didn't notice the second year curriculum on the website. Am I missing something very obvious about Tuck?

Nancy G.-Admissions: @elina-if you do not have an answer from your company before the deadline you can always send an email to tuck.admissions@tuck.dartmouth.edu if the status changes and we will add it to your file

kingfalcon:
Hi, guys. Are you planning to make a trek down to Boston for an info session any time soon?

Pat H - Admissions: Harshitauttam - Tuck has a loan program for international students that does not require a co-signer.  the amount loaned is based on a needs analysis by the financial aid office.  The maximum amount loaned is for tuition and fees so it wont cover full costs, but it is a good program.

tatambhotla: Hi Nancy. I understand that Tuck is focused on the healthcare sector. I wanted to understand from you the school's level of focus towards the pharmaceutical sector, in terms of avenues of learning beyond student clubs.

KaiaDekker-2013: Eugene:  almost everything.  Number one is probably my classmates.  eople are all incredibly talented and driven, but also really nice and supportive.  And social  I learn so much from them every day.

Lesley Chin '13: @ESilvani1c373c: Hi there - you bring up a great question about Hanover.  There are two important things about Tuck - 1) the alumni network here is incredibly strong and Tuckies are very big proponents of helping fellow Tuckies; there are enough of us in every industry that it does not hinder the process.  2) We have a great CDO (Career Development Office) who works very hard to maintain the fact that we have the highest number of graduates who get jobs.  I certainly have not seen it be an issue for anyone; if anything, people like coming up here and enjoying the scenery especially during fall foliage!

peteracrow: Hello- I wanted to ask about the 250 word response asking about international experiences.  Should this be more of a cut and dry explanation of travel experiences? Or should it be treated more of an essay question? By asking to reflect on how it has shaped your view it seems more like an essay question. Thanks.

harshitauttam:
Thank you Pat. Also are there any alumni I can get in touch with in India (Mumbai to be more specific?)

VHalemane_Mrutyunjayaa8357b: Hi, I'm Vivek from India. I will be a reapplicant in the Jan round. Although I realize that there cannot be a typical successful reapplicant profile, what are some of the things one can do (apart from GMAT) to strengthen the candidacy and be a successful reapplicant?

Pat H - Admissions: kingfalcon - we do not have plans for an info session in Boston anytime soon. Why don't you come up here for a visit?

karenm-admissions: Hi Kingalcon, we have been to Boston several times this Fall, but we are not planning to return in the next few months. If you are in Boston I highly encourage you to come visit us!

ESilvani1c373c: Thanks Leslie!

kingfalcon: @Matt Gallagher Maybe this is too much of a personal question, but are you going to be back in Boston for winter break? I live here now and it would be nice to chat with a current student.

Nancy G.-Admissions: @eugene: we have 5 students on the chat today...so that is a good start. You could also register for Tuck Connections http://www.tuck.dartmouth.edu/admissions/connect-with-us/tuck-connect-sign-up-form/

Pat H - Admissions: peteracrow - it can be a cut and dry explanation

Matt Gallagher (2013): @CFostera5143b I think the biggest misconception about Tuck is that its rural location limits career options/the opportunity to interact with business leaders. There are a multitude of opportunities here, we are not at all limited by our location. The one thing that I recommend all applicants know about Tuck is the value we place on community. It is very important to understand how collegial the community is here.

hardikm: @Nancy / Pat: I am visiting Hanover tomorrow. Will there be any classes that I can attend while I am there? How can I maximize my learning about Tuck during my visit?

kingfalcon: @Pat H - Thanks for answering my question. It's a little difficult since I don't have a car, but I'll just rent one and make the trek. When will you start offering tours in the new year?

ESilvani1c373c: How about Tuck's greatest weakness. Every program has one! What, in your opinion as a current student, could be the greatest improvement at Tuck?

PaulFay: Thanks for providing the chat! I am curious to hear more about what Tuck is doing to continue growing its brand, and what some key factors might be that would lead a student to choose to attend Tuck over some of the other premier business schools (Harvard, Wharton, Stanford...)

karenm-admissions: Hi hardikm, There aren't any classes tomorrow, unfortunately.  Are you registered for your visit?

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: kaia do you think the small town environment is much of an issue? is there much else to do apart from Tuck in hanover? Or is it just so engaging that you don't even notice the small town

elina.nalibotski@gmail.com:
A question about the interview. It indicates on website that for January round only, on campus interviews may be scheduled after the application deadline, until Jan 31st. Will it hurt me to interview after my application is in (mid-January) or does it not matter?

Pat H - Admissions: Vivek - it is impossible to give you blanket advice.  Every applicant is different.  Look at our average profile to see if you are in the ball park on each of the criteria.  If you are below average in an area, you might want to work on that.  Another area is to look at ways to differentiate yourself from the overall applicant pool.  Talk about your passions and what makes you unique and how you will contribute.

reddydineshm: Hello Tuck. What is the best possible way to get in contact with Tuck alumni from India and also outside India?

karenm-admissions: Hi Elina - As long as you interview by the deadline on the website it does not matter.

elina.nalibotski@gmail.com: Thanks Karen

Pat H - Admissions: reddydineshm - on our website is "Tuck Connections"  you can enter your interests and we will match you with an alum to connect with.

VHalemane_Mrutyunjayaa8357b: @Pat H, Thanks for your response.

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: also to all tuckies - what are your thoughts on HBS vs Tuck?

reddydineshm: Thanks Pat.

Andy Friedman T'13: PaulFey tuck is continuing to grow its brand. Recently we were named the #1 business school in the world by the Economist. We also created a European alumni advisory board to improve our relationship with European employers and help recruit more international students. Tuck continues to focus on its core brand of a great, intimate environment.

kingfalcon: @Pat - Thanks. That helped me, too.

Lesley Chin '13: @ESilvani: This isn't really a weakness (yes, I know it's not a direct answer!) but some of the core classes have a bit of an one-size-fits-all mentality.  However, this is to assure that all of us are on the same page and can start off with similar skill sets.  It's also a great opportunity to further the learning in and out of the classroom as though who are more experienced in some of the core classes usually are more than willing to coach, mentor, and support those who are trying to improve and/or learn.

KaiaDekker-2013: Gene:  I've always lived in cities, so it is a change!  But I wanted to get the small college town experience.  Within Hanover, there's a couple really good restaurants and bars, a movie theater, etc. but there's definitely a "small town" feel, where you run into people you know as you go out.  In the Upper Valley in general there's great skiing and hiking opportunities, and Dartmouth + Tuck also have so much going on all the time that you're never bored.  And if you miss the city, there are always people going to  Boston or NYC on the weekends (we get Fridays off!)

Lesley Chin '13: those* who are more experienced (I apologize for the typo!)

Matt Gallagher (2013): @eugene.hooi We don't go to HBS, so I can't comment on the relative merits of the programs. That said, I know that all four of us love it here. The curriculum is challenging, the community is tremendous, and we all feel like we made the right decision to come here.

ESilvani1c373c:
Thanks again!

hardikm: @Kaika / Andy / Matt / Lesley: I want to transit my career to Mgmt Consulting focused on healthcare. How can I develop necessary industry knowledge while at Tuck?

HuangShuo: Hi, when I filled in the Graduate Degree Information section in the online application. I can only put in one degree info. But I got 2 master degrees in same time and in same school (it's not dual-degree, just two separate degree). How can I input this info? Thanks.

harshitauttam: During the recuritment season (for internships / placements), do all recruiting companies come down to campus for interviews etc. or are all interviews held only in Boston / NY?

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: thanks kaia

greglarkin: @Andy Friedman & @KaiaDekker: Regarding entrepreneurship at Tuck... have you felt strong ties to the greater entrepreneurial community in the northeast? Have you had opportunities to interact with entrepreneurial leaders from industry while at Tuck? Any information on your experiences with entrepreneurship at Tuck is much appreciated, thanks!

Pat H - Admissions: huangShuo - you should upload both of your graduate transcripts.  You can put the additional degree information in the optional essay if it wont fit elsewhere

kvempati: Hi. I couldn't find the second year curriculum on the website (maybe I missed it). Can you please tell us what's in the second year at Tuck?

Lesley Chin '13: @hardikm - We have a very strong program related to Healthcare - we have the Healthcare Initiative here at Dartmouth, as well as a MD/MPH program, and there are numerous First Year projects (which are consulting projects!) for Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center which give you an opportunity to practice the skill sets you've learned during the core and utilize them in a real-world problem format for an actual client.  These are great opportunities to place on the resume!

ESilvani1c373c: For the adcom members: I applied through the Consortium on the 11/15 deadline and did not schedule an interview before the Tuck deadline because I was told to ignore school deadlines. Is there an opportunity for Consortium applicants to schedule an interview in the next few months?  Thank you

HuangShuo: Thanks pat.

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: matt - fair enough.

ebradbury: I have a specific question about the essay word limit for admissions moderators: is it frowned upon if all essays were over 500 words?  At what point does the admissions committee decide that an applicant has breached the word limit?

JHigham98b814: I was wondering if one of the current students could provide their perspective on the Tuck environment for spouses.

hardikm: @Pat / Karen / Nancy: I do have advanced degree (MS - MIS). How's performance in the MS is viewed against Undergraduate performance?

karenm-admissions: Esilvani, you did need to schedule your interview by the deadline.  There is a chance that we could invite you for an interview after reviewing your file.

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: all - i heard briefly about a points system for securing interviews with prospective employers. are you able to talk us through what this entails?

Matt Gallagher (2013): @harshitauttam We are in the midst of recruiting season at the moment. There are dozens of companies that plan to be on campus in early January to interview first year students for summer internships.

reddydineshm:
Tuck happens to be a well respected and recognized school in the US. But are there are any specific steps Tuck is taking to increase the brand recognition in Asia specifically India
?

Andy Friedman T'13: @greglarkin The entrepreneurial community at Tuck is great. Students have the opportunity to interact with entrepreneurs in small group environments. I have had lunch with several successful entrepreneurs who have visited campus. There are multiple entrepreneurial classes on campus for students to pursue their own business plans. Also in the First Year Project you can explore your own ideas. We also have an entrepreneurship club that sponsors activities; just last night I went to a whiteboarding session to brainstorm ideas.

bonnierong2010: @Karenm/Pat/Nancy, this is Bonnie.I submitted my recommenders via on-line system in Sep, but one of my recommender left my firm in Oct. I still wanted him to be my recommender, should I make extra explanation in the optional essay?

Pat H - Admissions: hardikm - we use the graduate performance as an additional data point, because everything is viewed holistically, we can't quantify how it is viewed against undergrad performance.

harshitauttam: Thank you Matt

KaiaDekker-2013: @JHigham:  I have a partner who lives in Boston (due to his job) but commutes up to Hanover many weekends.  He's definitely jealous of the TPs on campus though.  There's a really strong support system among partners up here -- they get together for social events, can audit classes, etc.

hardikm: @Pat: Thanks for clarification.

Pat H - Admissions: Bonnie - you might want to briefly explain in the optional essay if you are concerned, but it should not be a problem.

OEl_Manserde2d0a: I have a question about the biographical essay for the scholarship application. Is it considered separately from the other essays and so it is ok to have repetition? Or should we consider it as complementary and only add information that is not contained in the regular application essays?

VHalemane_Mrutyunjayaa8357b: What percentage of courses at Tuck use the case method?

bonnierong2010: Thanks Pat.

Pat H - Admissions: OEI - the scholarship essay is read by the financial aid office and is separate from the admissions application.

greglarkin: Thanks @Andy, great info.

Lesley Chin '13: @eugene - Our "bid" system, which is the point system to which you refer, is actually very similar to many business schools.  Yes, you are allotted a certain number of points every year for on-campus recruiting opportunities (this does not apply to off campus opportunities).  We have historical data on how many points were required to win each internship/offer so we can make educated guesses as to what we would need to win an interview slot, but you have to prioritize which opportunities matter most to you since there is a limit to your points.  Also, Tuck maintains a policy of 50% open/50% closed interviews: i.e., 50% of the interview slots will go to people who the company has determined they would like to interview (accepting that interview costs points), and the other 50

Nancy G.-Admissions: @bradbury: It is important that applicants adhere as closely as possible to the 500 limit guideline as possible. This ensures that the applicant is focused. We find that if an applicant goes much beyond the limit, rambling becomes and issue and the clarity of the essay is lost. While we don't actually count the words in each essay, please remember that the Ad Comm reads thousands of essays and those that do not embrace the 500 word guideline and go far beyond it are not usually to the benefit of the applicant

ESilvani1c373c: Thank you Karenm

Andy Friedman T'13: @reddydineshm As I mentioned in an earlier post. Tuck recently formed an alumni advisory board only for Europe a few months ago and we anticipate doing a similar one in Asia in the near term future. These advisory boards seek to build Tuck's reputation in those regions by connecting with some of the most prominent Tuck alumni and creating strategic plans to improve reputation, career placement, and recruiting prospective students.

OEl_Manserde2d0a: thanks for the answer Pat

Lesley Chin '13: (Eugene ct'd): % go to those who win the bidding process

reddydineshm:
Thanks Andy

Matt Gallagher (2013): @VHalemane_Mrutyunjayaa8357b There are only a few classes in the first year curriculum that rely entirely on the case method. That said, most classes in the first year curriculum utilize cases at different points to complement in-class lectures.

harshitauttam:
Thank you Nancy. That was helpful

ebradbury: @Nancy G Thanks

SNagalla27d585: Tuck has a longer core than many elite programs. Does Tuckies get enough time to master in their field of interest?

VHalemane_Mrutyunjayaa8357b: @Matt Gallagher  Thanks

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: thanks lesley. so the bidding process is more for people who are interested in changing careers? I would suspect that people continuing in a career would be relatively more attractive to an employer. do you have an idea of how many acceptances come from each half of the interview pool?

prashant_tuck: I wanted to confirm if the international applicants who cannot come on-campus will be invited for an off campus interview only if selected. And that they don't need to schedule any interview. Is that correct?

harshitauttam: Is it possible for an alumnus or a current student to recommend an applicant to the school? If so, does that help strengthen an application?

Nancy G.-Admissions: @kvempati: the second year curriculum is all elective the list can be found here http://www.tuck.dartmouth.edu/mba/elective-curriculum/elective-courses/

OEl_Manserde2d0a: Do many tuckies go into non-profit management consulting? Are there non-profit consulting companies that come to Campus?

kingfalcon: I know something Tuck prides itself on is having a collegial and collaborate atmosphere. I know the numbers bear that out (60+% of students give something every year), but can anybody give an example of how this has manifested itself in their time? I'd much rather go to a collegial school than a cut-throat one, so this is a very interesting topic to me.

Lesley Chin '13: @SNagalla: Yes! (We actually voted here and it's 4-0 Yes/No .  We do have a longer core but it ensures that we are extremely well balanced coming out of Tuck with skill sets we will all be using in the future.  There are also numerous opportunities within the core to focus on an area you love -I referenced the First Year Project; that's a great forum for it!

karenm-admissions: Prashant - Yes, that is correct.  There is no way for applicants to schedule off campus interviews, although we may invite you to have one after we review your file.

kingfalcon: collaborative*

kvempati: Thank you, Nancy.

prashant_tuck: Thanks Karenm!

Lesley Chin '13: @Eugene - it's not always for career switchers.  eople have to bid even if they're going back into the same career.  While some firms may value someone who has prior experience in the industry, not all companies think that way .  In terms of your second question, I'd fire that one off to the Career Development Office directly; I don't have the exact stats on that.  I do know the bidding process (specifically, the 50% open mentality) is meant to allow people who companies might normally not think of as ideal candidates to show the company that you're still a great fit.

PaulFay: With the alumni advisory boards and in other things, Tuck seems very interested in the global marketplace and generating a global presence. Might you comment for a moment on whether Tuck has a unified viewpoint on how the globalized economy will effect leadership and what skills will be most essential to compete internationally?

Pat H - Admissions: Harshitauttam - do you mean as your regular recommendation?  If so, it should be an alum who works with you closely and can comment on your abilities in detail.  If they don't know your work experience well, then you should not ask the alum to be your recommender.  If they just want to send a letter on your behalf, we are happy to include it in your file and use it as an additional data point.

harshitauttam: During my conversation with one of the current students, I gathered that private equity is not a favorable career choice for most Tuckies? Is that true? How many and which PE firms recruit from Tuck?

Andy Friedman T'13: king falcon: The collegial and collaborative environment at Tuck is one of our greatest strengths and one of the best parts of the school. This is reflected in our annual alumni donations. Last year over 70% of all Tuck alumni contributed (by far the highest percentage of any elite business school). This relationship with the school manifests itself mostly in the connection that the alumni have to the school. The alumni network is regarded and the most responsive in the world and I have gotten a quick response whenever I have reached out to an alumni. This helps dramatically with your initial job search and throughout your career.

kingfalcon:
@Andy Thank you. That's great to hear.

mmahar: how bad is it to apply in april vs. jan?

eugene.hooi@gmail.com: 70% is incredible!

Lesley Chin '13: @PaulFay: yes, you're right - we do have a focus on globalization.  There are a number of speeches given at Tuck, sites and centers for that focus here.

Matt Gallagher (2013): @OEl_Manserde2d0a:  I am not certain how many non-profit consultancies recruit at Tuck, but there are several. If non-profit management is something you are interested it, there is significant opportunity to explore that interest at Tuck. A number of students decide to pursue careers in the non-profit world after Tuck.

kvempati: wow! indeed, an active alumni network!

harshitauttam: Thanks Pat. If they just want to send a letter on the applicant's behalf, it should be sent to whcih email address?

OEl_Manserde2d0a: Thanks Matt

agaryali: How long is the Interview? What areas are covered? Who conducts it? Is it a one-on-one or a panel Interview?

ESilvani1c373c: Does this great collegial atmosphere carry over into career choices? i.e., do you see more students taking jobs at companies with similar cultures (for example Cambridge Associates) as opposed to other institutions where the environment is more "hostile"?

Pat H - Admissions: mmahar - historically, the April round is the most competitive because so much of the class has already been admitted and enrolled in the previous rounds.  However, we always admit people in april each year.

kingfalcon: To anybody, what's the best way for me to schedule a visit in Jan/Feb/March if I haven't applied? I'd obviously like to see as much as possible, but it's not immediately clear on the website what event I should be looking for.

SNagalla27d585: For career switchers, does Tuck offer something similar to Industry Mentoring initiative at stern. ?

mmahar: thanks!

Nancy G.-Admissions: @harshitauttam: PE is an extremely competitive career path..this is true regardless of the school one attends. We do have a broad alumni network in the field and students often reach out to them for help with good success. be sure to check out the Center for PE and Entrepreneurship they are a great resource

Nancy G.-Admissions: http://http://mba.tuck.dartmouth.edu/pecenter/

bonnierong2010: As an international applicant, is it a disadvantage that I cannot visit the campus on site?

karenm-admissions: agaryali, the interviews generally last for 30  - 45 minutes.    They are one on one, not panel, and can be with a second year interviewer or an admissions officer.  The topics are what you will find at most business schools - why you want an MBA, why Tuck, etc.

bryan.cory: For the current students: what are a few of Tuck's "can't miss" classes, and would you say it's the professors or the material that make them such favorites?

karenm-admissions: bonnierong - we understand that people cannot always make it to campus.

Pat H - Admissions: kingfalcon - you can schedule an interview/class visit on line.  If you are planning to apply in the January round, you need to have it completed before January 31.  It is on the website under "visit us"

harshitauttam:
Thanks Nancy

JaredL817: I've heard great things about Tuck's culture, community and network.  Would you say the academic environment specifically is more collaborative than competitive?  Is there grade disclosure at Tuck?

bonnierong2010: Thanks Karenm

PaulFay: Thanks @Lesley, but I think I'm looking for a little more. I'd like to understand some of the ideological differentiation between the top business schools as to how they approach globalization, leadership and pedagogy. Do you know if there might be a good way for me to give a listen to any of these lectures or speak with anyone regarding the philosophical approach that Tuck takes to teaching business?

agaryali: If someone wants to take a Leadership position in the Consulting or other Clubs, how does one go about it at Tuck? Are there elections for that, or do faculty select the office bearers based on previous work experience?

Lesley Chin '13: @SNagalla: Our clubs here are amazingly active about prepping first years for the process.  They offer mock interviews, they offer numerous guides and walkthroughs about the industries, and they will review resumes and cover letters.  Also, all second years are willing to sit down with you over lunch, dinner, and/or coffee to discuss any questions you have on the process.  Further, to points already alluded to throughout this chat, our alumni network is amazing and they frequently take time out of their lives to do the exact same prep with all of us going through the process.  eople switch careers all the time at Tuck and are usually very well prepared.

tatambhotla: Hi. I understand that Tuck is focused on the healthcare sector. I wanted to understand from you the school's level of focus towards the pharmaceutical sector, in terms of avenues of learning beyond student clubs.

tatambhotla: Hi Nancy. I understand that Tuck is focused on the healthcare sector. I wanted to understand from you the school's level of focus towards the pharmaceutical sector, in terms of avenues of learning beyond student clubs.

AGhotge7531de: Hi, I would like to know a little about Tuck's marketing program. Where does it stand with respect to certain other programs in the US such as the marketing program at Ross.

Matt Gallagher (2013): @ESilvani1c373c: I'm not sure how the collegial atmosphere translates to recruiting. In general, students tend to pick future careers based off of intellectual interest/careergoals. I'm sure collegiality is a factor for some, but in general, I would think it is a secondary issue for many when picking a career.

kingfalcon: @Pat Thanks. Sorry if I was unclear, but I'm not planning to apply until next fall. I would just like to visit before applying, if possible.

Andy Friedman T'13: @bryan.cory. We are all first year students right now and are going through the core curriculum and haven't had the opportunity to take electives yet. My personal favorite classes in the core were Analysis for General Managers and Managerial Economics; though many of my friends really like other classes more. Overall, the core has been a great experience so far and I have been really impressed with the teaching ability of the Tuck professors.

kingfalcon: And thanks in advance!

ESilvani1c373c: Thanks Matt

bryan.cory: Thanks Andy

SNagalla27d585: Thanks a ton Lesley..!!

KaiaDekker-2013: @AGhotge:  Tuck doesn't offer "majors", but we have a lot of marketing electives, as well as a very strong and active marketing club. Also, a number of companies come on campus and do events (e.g., General Mills did a "marketing boot camp" event) We place a lot of people into marketing, brand management, and similar roles every summer and in full time as well.  Marketing is a big presence on campus.

kvempati: How are the job opportunities for international students?

Pat H - Admissions: kingfalcon - you are welcome to come up for just a class visit without the interview later in the spring. Once we are done with interviews for applicants applying this year we will be open to visitors who just want to learn more about Tuck.  Check back in March/April to sign up.

AGhotge7531de: Thanks Kaia

greglarkin: In terms of post-Tuck employment, do you get a sense that many Tuckies stay in the northeast? With the active and engaged alumni base, is the alumni presence felt uniformly across the US?

Lesley Chin '13: @Jared - The academic environment here is definitely both, but it is competitive in a very friendly way! Tuck is small and so we all know each other very well and we all do think the world of each other .  You do a lot in your study group and so that fosters a collaborative environment but we all want to do well during our two years, however, the difference is that we try to support each other towards that end!

Nancy G.-Admissions: @tatambhotla-I don't have in-depth knowledge for your specific question. The best place to start is the Healthcare Initiative at Tuck. Dartmouth also has resources...my apologies I cannot be more specific

Matt Gallagher (2013): @agaryali Leadership responsibilities are generally transferred through a vote of fellow students. Those who ascend to leadership roles in clubs tend to have strong expertise and knowledge in the club's focus area (e.g., in the case of the consulting club, the president had a summer internship in consulting)

Andy Friedman T'13: @greglarkin New York and Boston are 2 of the top locations for employment though I think you would find that the case at a number of top business schools. We have an active alumni network throughout the US. I think the most important part of an alumni network is quality not quantity and I think you'll find that Tuck's alumni network is the most responsive. If you email / call an alumni you will get a response from a Tuck alumni I'm not sure if that is true at other schools.

KaiaDekker-2013: @peteracrow:  Yes, lots of leadership coursework.  The core for first years includes 3 courses specifically on leadership (leading organizations, leading individuals & teams, personal leadership).  There are also a number of electives as well.  I would say Personal Leadership is a great course and something that's really unique to Tuck -- you get feedback from former coworkers and study group members on your leadership style and craft a personal leadership development plan.

Lesley Chin '13: @reddyineshm: We have Tuck Student Consulting Services which is a program where you can practice your skill sets on a local client's business needs.  We also have pre-term programs around the community: I did one called "tuckbuilds" which pairs with local home rehabilitation and repair non-profits to build homes.  We also are required as a study group in the early fall to help a local business with a specific business issue.

Nancy G.-Admissions: @agaryali: it is difficult to predict how challenging any student's career search will be. So much depends on each individual student's determination, ability to create and deliver on a career search plan, how they deal with rejection and other challenges related to career switch.  A large % of students attend MBA programs with career switching in mind-so it's not uncommon. Much comes down to the individual student

karenm-admissions: Vhalemane - Tuck students are allowed to take courses at other schools if they can fit it into their schedules.  However, it can be hard to find time to take courses outside of Tuck.
