虽然知道如何选的E，但是不是很明白the chemical irritant放在句中是做什么成份。
翻了下旧帖，发现有两种解释。
1. the chemical irritant作为render的宾语。可是，为什么要特意放在句末，这样讲话老美觉得看着舒服！？...><
2. the chemical irritant作enzymes的同位语。其实我自己后来在想的时候，也是想到的这个解释。

请NN指教啊~

the chemical irritant是render的宾语，而harmless作为宾语补足语提前了，正确语序是render (the chemical irritant) harmless,
因为irritant是形容词修饰the chemical，正常语序的harmless也是形容词，连续两个adj出现，u can see...

or render harmless是插入成分，起到形象的解释metabolize（代谢）这个词的作用。
the chemical irritant是动词不定式to metabolize的宾语。irritant这里是名词。
句子核心成分如下：
dioxin induces the production of enzymes （that are the organism's attempt to metabolize the chemical irritant）
