D is the correct answer.

A. it指代不明确。
B. 同上，而且没有by way of的说法。
C. the last指代错误，应该用the latter, 后者。
E. 根据上下文的含义，不应该用due to.

D我也同意，可是有一个小问题，为什么不是have a direct contact呢？

我查了下字典，contact当“接触”和“联系”的意思讲时是不可数名词，当“熟人”和“门路”讲时是可数名词。

我觉得A里面的directly的修饰是squint的：既可以修饰have contact，又可以修饰后面的with短语，不知说得过去否？

A中的directly位置是有问题的, 副词可以修饰整个句子, 所以可以被理解成为修饰claimed, 即claimed directly, 这和应表达的逻辑不符.

Due to为什么会意思不符？

个人认为，E的一个最大的错误就是contact的词性，Due to 错是因为表达的意思应该是通过某种途径，而不是因为。

请指教
